San Francisco Premier Lions Club Donated to Housing Project for Typhoon Victims in the
Philippines - 2020

Last November 2020, members of the San Francisco Premier Lions Club (SFPLC) came into
the aid of typhoon victims in Cagayan, Philippines. Typhoon Vamco (known in the Philippines as
Ulysses) ravaged many regions of Luzon and caused severe flooding that resulted in the
displacement of hundreds of residents. In the area of the Cagayan Valley—which was a catch
basin of a nearby dam and a major river—the heavy rainfall brought the worst flood the province
had seen in 40 years. Local government offices reported that at least 174,940 individuals across
26 municipalities in Cagayan were affected by the floods, and over 11,000 families were sent to
evacuation centers.

Both government-initiated and volunteer-led relief efforts provided for affected residents in badly
hit areas. All the way from San Francisco, members of the SFPLC pitched in. SFPLC’s chosen
beneficiary is Project Salinong—a housing project aimed at building new homes for over one
hundred families in the municipality of Baggao, Cagayan. The initial plan amount of 50,000-peso
per housing unit, was later changed to 150,000-peso duplex unit due to rising cost of materials
attributed to the slow-building process because of the pandemic. SFPLC donated a generous
amount that was turned over to Mons. Gerry Perez, founder of Project Salinong. This amount
contributes to a 150,000-peso duplex unit that will now house two families.

As of June 2021, about 25 duplex units are already in varying stages of completion. Upon its
fulfillment, Project Salinong will be providing shelter to 137 families displaced by Typhoon
Vamco.
