Senator Lions Club Update

Passing of a Senator Lion

Senator Lions Club (SLC) member PDG Dan Wenger passed away on August 26, 2018.  Dan was a District Governor (with another club), a Lions historian, a generous donor, and a true Lion. He annually contributed to Camp Ross Relles for the upkeep and support of the camp, and purchased turkeys for the school Christmas basket project. SLC made a donation to Lions Education Foundation in Dan’s memory.

Camp Ross Relles

Special recognition to Lions Karen Quartier Barrow and Gilbert Barrow for the amazing work they do for Camp Ross Relles. For 3 weeks in August, Lion Karen helped in the camp kitchen with cooking and clean up for several groups including the Inner City Kids, Deaf Kids, and At Risk Youth. Karen and crew served approximately 215 kids and adults meals of spaghetti, pizza, BBQ chicken, BBQ hamburgers, egg and bacon English muffins, tomato soup and cheese quesadillas, and much more! In September, Karen and Gilbert were at camp for the Lions Work Weekend. Karen spent most of her time cooking and cleaning for the workers; and also repainted one of the two benches that needed sprucing up. Gilbert helped with re-roofing two cabins and completed a few odd jobs around camp.

Life Membership

At our November meeting, Lions Amy Matsumoto and Alice Yagi were surprised with the well-deserved Life Membership award for their many years of dedicated service to our club. Congratulations Amy and Alice!

Fundraisers

We had two very successful fundraisers this past year thanks to the efforts of our fundraiser chairpersons:

The Mid-Autumn Festival, chaired by Lion Jennie Chiu Allen, was held at the Asian Pearl Restaurant and attended by over 200 guests who enjoyed a delicious dinner and entertaining dance performances. Thank you to our members and other Lions club members for their generous donations of dessert, wine, and raffle prizes. Much appreciation goes to Camellia Lion Sasha Eastley for her help with the event.

December’s DandeLion Craft Show was co-chaired by Lions Karen Adachi and Gloria Inaba. Vendors filled 38 spaces and sold various items including greeting cards, jewelry, glassware, manju, tote bags, decorated towels, clothing, and many other wonderful crafts.

Our next upcoming fundraisers are the SLC/JACL crab feed (January 26th) and Spaghetti Feed (April 12th).

Volunteer Service

On November 3rd, several SLC members volunteered to help at the Society for the Blind Resource and Technology Resource Fair with set-up, registration, and assisting attendees. Lion Shari Roeseler (Executive Director, Society for the Blind) said that the event was VERY successful!  Looking forward to next year’s fair!

Chistmas Party

Our annual Christmas party was held at the Aviators Restaurant. Lion Mary Chan chaired this fun event. Guests were served a delicious buffet dinner and enjoyed the greedy Santa gift exchange (including a surprise visit by special guest Santa).  Members brought to the dinner toys and non-perishable food donations for Sierra Enterprise Elementary School families. SLC added gift cards to the donation.  Thank you to Lion Vicky Brady for coordinating the Christmas “gift basket” project.
