The Oklahoma City Northwest Lions Club's 25th annual charity golf tournament will support a number of the club's causes.

Proceeds from the tournament, set for 8:30 a.m. Monday at Fairfax Golf Club in Edmond, will buy eyeglasses for children and support the Oklahoma Lions Boys Ranch and the Oklahoma Lions Eye Bank.

At the golf tournament, prizes will be given to the top three teams, and door prizes will be available for all players. The entry fee is $100 per person, with lunch included.

The major fundraiser is expected to help people locally, nationally and even internationally. Glasses will be recycled and distributed to developing countries.

“The Lions Club has been noted for going out of their way to help people, even internationally. We are able to do that through our fundraising,” said Jim Barnett, Northwest Lions Club secretary.

“Boys Ranch is for abused boys. Some have been abused in all kinds of ways, and they have no family or no place to go," Barnett said.

Teenagers at the Boys Ranch are enrolled in school and encouraged to participate in sports, music and other activities.

Since 1961, members of the Northwest Lions Club have been dedicated to serving the community while enjoying fellowship, Barnett said.

The Lions Clubs International organization has more than 1.3 million members in more than 200 countries.

“I don’t know how to tell you, except it gives you a warm fuzzy feeling to know something you did is going to help somebody else that is less fortunate then you are," Barnett said.

The Northwest Lions Club adopted Hilldale Elementary School and donates funds to the school’s Reading is Fundamental program. The club also provides mittens, gloves, scarves and coats at Christmastime.

The club sponsors annual scholarships to students majoring in business at Southern Nazarene University.

Barnett invited people to participate in meetings as a guest, where they’ll have the opportunity to ask questions and see the club in action.

“We’ll be happy to talk to them, and you know, do everything we can so they can help us, and we can help other people. They can join our club, become members and help people too," Barnett said.
