Meetings

Our Beginnings

In the fall of 1974 the late Carl Harvey, a local businessman and a member of the Toronto Beaches Lions Club saw an opportunity to answer the needs of the small villages of Gilford and Lefroy.

Under the guidance of District Governor Gord Walker and Extension Chair, PDG John W. Taylor, Lion Carl invited many of his friends and neighbours to several meetings and so the history of the Gilford & District Lions Club began.

The Bradford Lions Club and the Toronto Beaches Lions Club were the official sponsors of the new club, which was chartered May 23, 1975 with Lion Carl Harvey as the Charter President.

It didn't take long before the fundraising efforts made an impact within the community.

In the 1970's the events included Walk-a-thons, Donkey Baseball at Fennels' Ballpark, Ski-a thon at Golf Haven, Wrestling Night at Lefroy Arena, Travel Club Draw, and CNIB canvassers.  Funds raised provided lighting and fencing at Fennels Corner Ballpark, a "Clean the Beaches" project, free skating at Golf Haven Golf Club, purchase of a wheelchair for a local resident, financial assistance and/or home repairs for fire victims, families in need, food baskets etc. Net income that first year was over $2200.00.

The Gilford & District Lions Club continues to support our  International and local communities including many youth projects: Scouts, Guides, Lefroy Minor Hockey, Lefroy Figure Skating, Effective Speaking, Peace Poster Contest, Lions' Quest Drug Awareness, Gilford Children's Christmas Party, school playground equipment, books for the school library and the list goes on.

Over the years, new fundraisers have been introduced Boxing Day & Mother's Day Breakfast, Fireworks Sale at Trotter's Esso, Nevada Ticket sales at the Highway Market, as the club continues to meet the increasing needs of the community and around the world.
