Membership

The Lions Club of Calgary recently welcomed two new members.  Our own Past District Governor Lion Bill Baux inducted Ms Gloria Brehm and Ms Jennifer Mutimbidzen into our ranks.  Both ladies have already been involved in our fund raising efforts and attending our meetings.

Fund Raising

The word from the Barbecue Committee is that they are already signing up more customers for our catering service.

The Stampede Breakfasts that we cooked and served were very successful and contributed considerably to our fund raising bank accounts.  The Barbecue Committee thanks all of the members and their friends who pitched in for the events that ranged from 300 guests to more than 1,500 breakfast attendees.

The Club thanks Lion Jim Cameron, Lion Otto Strand and the rest of the committee for their hard work.  Now we have to begin the planning process for next year's Stampede.

Festival of Lights

For the 29th year Lion Otto Silzer led the efforts to update and erect the Christmas light display known as the Lions Festival of Lights.  Many man-hours were donated by members of our Club, members of other Lions Clubs and friends and local volunteers.

Early in November a host of volunteers gathered at Confederation Park on a cool but calm day to set up the Festival of Lights displays.  Then, on November 29th, in front of a crowd of about 1000 hardy souls, the Mayor of Calgary, the Honourable Naheed Nenshi threw the switch that energized the many thousands of lights and kicked off the opening fireworks display.  As is the tradition, hot chocolate and chocolate chip cookies, donated by Tim Horton’s, were provided free to all who attended.

Special thanks to Lion Otto for his tireless efforts and to those loyal individuals that work with him night after night until the display is finished.  A thank you goes also to the Enmax crews who brought the bucket trucks in their off hours to hang the large panels of lights.

The lights will be lit every evening from 6:30 to 11:00 PM during the month of December until January 6th.

In March, 2016 another large group of volunteers - Lions, family members, friends, and reliably the IBEW Enmax crews with thei bucket trucks - gathered at Confederation Park and dismantled the major parts of the lights display and stored them for another year at the FOL shack.

Past District Governor Lion Bill and his wife Lion Donna Baux again served up a delicious beef-on-a-bun lunch for the the volunteer horde.

Well done for the 29th time Lion Otto Silzer.
