REPORT ON THE 2014
6th
Annual

HELD SUNDAY MARCH 23th 2014

It was great family day out over an exciting new route that many will have never seen, with a spectacular destination as the reward.

Exploring the West with the Lions

Twenty three cars with 62 participants left Blockhouse Bay Intermediate School and threaded their way through the suburbs of West Auckland in the Blockhouse Bay-Lynfield Lions' Annual Wild Westie Fun Car Rally last weekend.
But before heading off in their cars, they went for a walk through the school's magnificent Wai Tahuna bush reserve created out of waste land bordering the Whau portage. They had to write down the names of 45 native trees that were marked with plaques. The main object was to raise awareness of this hidden treasure that is open to everyone. This was achieved, judging by glowing comments made.

..

Navigators deciphered the clues on the itinerary to then guide the drivers to reach two destinations. The first one, after winding around the back of Kaurilands to Glen Eden, then via Waikumete and Sunnyvale, to Tui Glen.

There the Lions advance crew had morning refreshments ready and all entrants were given the opportunity to explore this historic quarter of Henderson. With its past glories as an orchard, a wharf for shipping from Auckland before roads were made, and then later as an holiday park,  all illustrated on plaques throughout the area. A bonus for some were the many windfall pears that carpeted the grass under the 100 year old heritage trees.

The final leg of the Rally took the now keen entrants up to Waiatarua, along the Scenic Drive and back down the spectacular Mountain Rd with its vista stretching from Hobsonville on the left to Rangitoto and Eastern Suburbs on the right with the green of Henderson Valley in the foreground. Following Candia Rd and down Sturgess Rd to Hendserson Heights, across to Ranui before heading into the hidden hills of Birdwood. The route looped back to the Scenic Drive again and up along Te Henga Rd and finally into Falls Rd for the goal of the Cascades in the Waitakere Regional Park.
Meanwhile the Lions crew had hastened ahead to the grassy knoll above Cascades entrance and set up the Marquee for a BBQ. When the Rally entrants arrived they handed in their quiz sheets and settled into a picnic. Some later went exploring the tracks that led by the river, to the falls.

..

The judges had a major job on checking and marking the quiz sheets for accuracy. In the end some were very close, and only when the odometer readings were taken into consideration the finalists were selected. That then came down to a toss for the Winners Ros Woolhouse and brother Doug Hunt with Runner-Up Jessica Meurant. At the end of the day the Blockhouse Bay Community Patrol will benefit from around $500 to be donated by the Lions, this will in turn help to reduce crime and vandalism in Blockhouse Bay and Green Bay.
