What's Happening?
Fundraiser Nov. 17 at Casa Della Nonna (Yum!!!)
Come to our next monthly meeting: Thurs., Nov. 17 (Yes, it's the same date as our fundraiser!)
We're having a pizza party! We'll be in the meeting room and hosting a small group of invited guests, starting at 6:30! We'll be honoring these guests because of the support they have given us; customized Lions certificates of appreciation will be presented.
If you have a friend or family member who'd like to learn more about us, please feel free to invite him or her! We'll have our display board and also some printed info on Lions to take away....
*** Please note that this meeting is on a Thursday, not our usual Wednesday. It's a busier night at the restaurant and so, a better night for our fundraiser.
We took 808 pairs of glasses to this fall's District eyeglass sorting!
We believe this is a record for our Club! The increased number of sites with our collection boxes has certainly been a factor in this. Thanks to Lions Doug and Marie for their work.
Ever wonder what happens to the old eyeglasses you and others donate to the Lions Club? Twice a year, we get together with Lions from other clubs in Maryland to sort and pack approximately 20,000 pairs of donated eyeglasses. Extra hands are always welcome! Our spring sorting will, as always,be at the MD School for the Blind in northeastern Baltimore and there's always room in our carpool.
Sorting starts at 8 am and is usually complete by 10:30. Free donuts and coffee for volunteers are part of the fun. Individuals who aren't Lions but would like to help are always welcome.
The result? Eyeglasses become available for individuals living in countries where there is no place to get them. The glasses that we pre-sort are shipped to a facility that analyzes and sterilizes them. Both prescription and non-prescription sunglasses are welcome due to the intense sun in many of the locations the glasses are shipped to.
Fall season extra-busy with multiple vision-screening events
"Health Fair" and "Fall" seem to go together in our area. This fall we conducted free vision screenings, as we always do, for adults and children at the health fair at St. Joseph's Church in Odenton and at the annual Odenton Day event at the firehouse. (Special thanks to Terry, from the Glen Burnie Club, for her assistance at Odenton Day!)
AND, we were invited to participate in planning and participating in the first-ever health fair at St. Bernadette Parish in Severn. This successful new event was held in partnership with Baltimore-Washington Medical Center. It looks like it will become an annual event for the parish--and our Club. Hurray!
10 Years Strong.... Our Mission--and who we are!
West Arundel Lions Club (WALC), which began in 2007, serves Annapolis Junction, Crownsville, Fort Meade, Gambrills, Hanover, Harmans, Jessup, Maryland City, Millersville, Odenton, Severn, and the surrounding West Anne Arundel County areas.
As Lions, we contribute our time and talent to service projects and fundraising to help others. One of the primary objectives of our club is to help youth. Few goals are more important than raising the next generation to be responsible, productive, and happy adults. Our work ranges from conducting free vision screenings to helping restore the Odenton Elementary School playground.
We also hold several events to bring cheer to senior citizens living in our area.
To support these activities and more, we hold fundraisers throughout the year. We strictly follow Lions Clubs International's policy: every nickel raised in the community is returned to the community. Our administrative costs are covered by member dues and funds "donated" by members during meetings.
Looking for a Charity to donate to? West Arundel Lions Club has a 501(c)(3) Foundation: the West Arundel Lions Foundation. Donors may claim donations given to the foundation as tax deductible.
Who are we? Business people, educators, government employees, men and women who want to help others--and have some fun in the process!
