Unionville Lions Club Honors Two Outstanding Members

by Lion Rachel Walker

At a called meeting on Monday, June 15, 2020, fellow Lions honored two of their members

for their dedicated, humanitarian service to the club and the community: Lion Betty Hinson and Lion David Yarborough.

On behalf of the club, Lion Jerry Hinson presented Lion Betty Hinson a Lions Clubs International Lifetime Membership. She has faithfully served the Unionville Lioness Club and the Unionville Lions Club for the past thirty-nine years. She served as charter president of the Unionville Lioness Club and has held many offices with the Unionville Lions Club: president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, and board member. With her husband, Lion Jerry Hinson, Lion Betty has co-chaired the Unionville July 4th Celebration, Concerts in the Park, and Thanksgiving Day Turkey Shoot as community service projects and fundraisers. She has been selected Lion of the Year several times, and the club has honored her and her husband with the establishment of the Jerry and Betty Hinson Scholarship Award. On the district level, Lion Betty served as Zone Chair, Humanitarian and White Cane Chair, and Clinical Eye Research Chair. On the state level, she served as Clinical Eye Research Chair.

Congratulations and many thanks to Lion Betty Hinson for being honored by our club. She now joins two fellow Lions who have received this award in the past: Lion Jerry Hinson in 2003 and PDG and Past NC LI President Jim Walker in 2011.

Also, on behalf of the club, Lion President Jim Martin presented Lion David Yarborough the Lion of the Year Award, whose recipient is selected by anonymous votes by club members. For the past three years, Lion David has enthusiastically served on numerous committees and worked diligently on community service projects and fundraisers. He has especially been responsible for the distribution of fruit baskets to VIPs, the collection of items for various food pantries in Union County, and the sale of brooms.

This year, Lion David has chaired the Public Relations Committee and the July 4th Committee. He has also held the offices of 2nd vice president and tail twister.  At our meetings, Lion Tail Twister David has entertained us, promoted good will among us, and challenged us to let our community know that “Where there’s a need, there’s a Unionville Lion.” Lion David’s wife, Lion Stacie Yarborough, has also faithfully served with him.

Congratulations and much appreciation to Lion of the Year David Yarborough for your outstanding contributions to our club’s success this year.
