QUEENS COLOMBIA LIONS CLUB

Queens Colombia Lions Club recieved its charter from the Lios Clubs International on May 5th,2003 with thirty members listed on the roster. We are members of the International Association of Lions Club, Multiple District 20 of New York State and Bermuda Lions Club and District 20-K1 of Brooklyn and Queens. We were sponsored by Laurelton Lions Club, Inc and was inaguarated on June 14, 2003. Lion Graciela Giraldo served as Charter President.

From 2003 – 2012, the club organized  successful health fairs  to SERVE the community of Elmhurst, Jackson heights and Corona.The event was held at the St. Bartholomew's Church.

Queens Colombia Lions Club organized its 2nd Annual Health Fair to SERVE the community

For the past 17 years, our club has directly helped more than 2000 people in the community through service projects or donations made to local charities and Lions causes.

Adapting to fit the needs of the community during the global pandemic, the members organized a workshop about the spread and prevention of the Covid-19 infection to the Spanish speaking seniors via zoom. Also, the club made the following donations:

• 300 Face masks to the Elmhurst Hospital

• 100 Masks to the Briarwood Shelter

•  300 Face masks to the Center Civic of Colombia of Jackson Heights, Queens to be distributed in the community.

•  900 Disposables lunch containers to Our Lady Of The Angelus Food Pantry

From 2014 to present, members served the community in many ways. We donate toys to Abraham House (Home for the children of incarcerated parents), used eyeglasses to needy individuals and makes donations of used books to the Elmhurst Library. Members have participated in the annual walk for Breast Cancer, Diabetes,  and the Manhattan and Queens Hispanic Parade. We have made monetary contributions to support various Disaster Relief, both domestic and international.

To increase the service and visibility in the community, the club has partnered with local adult day care centers, churches and hospitals to sponsor the Annual Thanksgiving Breakfast and Lunch for the homeless and needy families of Woodside and Corona and Queens Boulevard. Also, the club distributes hats and gloves to a shelter in Queens.

Our club in conjuction with Lions Clubs of Jackson Heights, Corona and Bayside donated personal care items and medical supplies to shelters in Queens. Below are some of the entities the members  support:

• St Joan of Arc Elementary School Scholarship Program

• Chritsmas for Needy Children. Barranquilla, Colombia

• Heart to Heart Foundation of New York

• The Lord of Miracles

From 2015 to present, the club began to support Our Lady Of The Angelus Food Pantry by donating non perishables foods. During these years, the club  has hosted several successful fundraisers such as raffles, bus trips, walkathons and the ^15th Anniversary Celebration Dinner Dance.  As a result of the club’s fundraising efforts, the club could initiate a scholarship fund for needy children of St, Joan of Arc Elememntary School in Jackson Heights, Queens. 

At the club level,  the members have been recognized for their outstanding performance  and dedication to the lionism as follow: Therteen Lions  of the Year, four Melvin Jones Fellows,  two Robert J Uplinger and two Alexander T. Wells awards. We have  been very active in our district 20-K1. We have had three zone Chairs, two  Region Chairs and one District Cabinet Treasurer. We have been part of  several committees such as: Spanish GMT/GLT and Orientation committes and others. 

The club promotes its service projects through social media: MyLion application, e-clubhouse.org, Kings & Queens E-News, Facebook, El Rojo, a local digital newspaper and El Especialito.

The club won the first place  of the Peace Poster Contest in 2012 at the district level. We received a patch from the Lions Club International for membership growth in 2004 to 2018. Retention in 2015, 2017. A Centennial Service Challenge 2017-2018 and 2018-2019. A patch from The Eye Bank in 2013.
