Welcome to the Pacifica Lions Club

Celebrating our 74th  year of community service to Pacifica!

Our Beginning

In 1917, Melvin Jones, a 38-year-old Chicago business leader, told members of his local business club they should reach beyond business issues and address the betterment of their communities and the world.  After contacting similar groups around the United States, an organizational meeting was held on June 7, 1917, in Chicago, Illinois, USA and what followed was the formation of the Lions Club.  Within three years, the Lions became an international organization.

Our Inspiration

Then in 1925 our goal was made clear to us by Helen Keller who challenged the Lions:  “The opportunity I bring to you, Lions, is this: To foster and sponsor the work of the American Foundation for the Blind.  Will you not help me hasten the day when there shall be no preventable blindness; no little deaf, blind child untaught; no blind man or woman unaided?  I appeal to you Lions, you who have your sight, your hearing, you who are strong and brave and kind.  Will you not constitute yourselves Knights of the Blind in this crusade against darkness?”

And we accepted...

Our 46,000 clubs, 1.35 million members in 207 countries make us the world's largest service club organization.  Today, sight programs remain one of our defining causes.  For nearly 100 years, our members have worked on projects designed to prevent blindness, restore eyesight and improve eye health and eye care for hundreds of millions of people worldwide.

But that’s not where we stop.  Our international humanitarian programs are focused in four main areas:

Our Mission

Preserving Sight
Since 1990, SightFirst has been making quality eye care accessible to those who most need it.  SightFirst has made it possible for more than 30 million people to have improved or restored vision.

Supporting Youth
Over the past 25 years, 12 million young people in 78 countries have benefited through Lions Quest, our youth development program for kindergarten through 12th grade.

Providing Disaster Relief
In times of disaster, Lions meet immediate needs such as food, water and shelter with funds from LCIF.  For larger-scale disasters, the Foundation remains committed to helping communities rebuild into the future.

Meeting Humanitarian Needs
LCIF is active in a variety of international humanitarian efforts, such as supporting the construction of homes for the disabled, providing vision screenings to Special Olympics athletes and combating measles.

Our Club

The Pacifica Lions Club

Our Club was chartered in 1949 and is composed of dedicated men and women that want to make a difference in their community; that share a common goal to make their community a better place to live, through involvement and service.  There are no restrictions in becoming a Lion except that you be an adult of good moral character, possess a desire to be involved in our community and want to serve with a humble, servant’s heart.  We strive to foster and create a spirit of understanding among the people of the world, to encourage service minded people to serve their community without pursuing personal or financial gains and to take an active interest in the welfare of their community.
