Ocean City Lions Club USFOCAP Project

(United States Forces Overseas Casualty Assistance Program)

When our military troops are injured in Iraq and Afghanistan, they are given preliminary stabilizing medical care on site, and then flown to the regional medical center in Landstuhl, Germany. They arrive at Landstuhl in hospital pajamas; their battle clothing and equipment are removed at the field treatment facility. Their clothing, gear, and personal effects may never reach them.

This situation was presented to the Lions Board of Directors and our wounded warrior program was created in 2003 with the name chosen USFOCAP – United States Forces Overseas Casualty Assistance Program.  The first year we did many different projects to get money and new clothing to send to our wounded warriors.  In 2006 a golf game was discussed and approved. The eleventh annual tournament will be held on October 12th of 2016 at the Ocean City Golf Club.

Throughout the year, we collect donations of clothing, toiletries, and other personal care items for our wounded troops. We sort, package and then send the donated items to the medical center in Landstuhl. To date the Ocean City Lions have sent the wounded warriors over 19,000 items of new clothing and more than $230,000 for their health and welfare.

Why are we doing this? We do this because these volunteer men and women are sacrificing their lives and suffering injuries to keep us safe at home.

If you would like to contribute or participate in the USFOCAP project, including in our golf tournament, contact project co-chairs Lions Norman Cathell, Ben Dawson, or Mike Hooper. Please send an email to our Club Secretary at OceanCityLionsClub@gmail.com and your inquiry will be forwarded to the appropriate person.
