The Mon River Fleet Lions Club

Our Club was established in 2011 with about a dozen members under the guidance of our Immediate Past President Michele Matuch.  Over the years our Club has grown to over 70 members, the largest and most diverse group in District 14-B.

Unlike our sister clubs that have a specific geographic base, the Mon River Fleet Lions Club is unique in that it was formed as a “specialty” club.  Michele Matuch, as head of McKeesport Hospital Foundation, had already created a “Fleet of SHIPs,” short for State Health Improvement Plans, in Braddock, Clairton, Duquesne and McKeesport.  Our Mon River FLEET Lions Club was formed solely for the purpose of supporting those SHIPs and their communities.  Our Club members are drawn from those four communities as well as from outlying neighborhoods, because they believe there is value and personal reward in assisting communities through fundraising and service projects.

Our Mon River Fleet Leo Club is made up of students from McKeesport Area High School.  They support many of our fundraising and service initiatives and often continue into Lionism after high school.

Our fund raising activities include White Cane Days, bus trips to Niagara Falls and other attractions,  pancake breakfasts and barbecues, holiday gift card framing and basket of cheer raffles, and joint sales with the McKeesport Kiwanis Club.

Each June, our Mon River Fleet Lions Club distributes the proceeds from our fundraising . Our beneficiearies include Meals on Wheels, area food banks, Head Start and First Step programs, our area S.H.I.P.s and many other organizations.    We've also collected hats, gloves and scarves for children, and supplies for the Boys and Girls Clubs.  We participated in Operation Safety Net for the homeless and we donated Christmas trees for Kane Regional Hospital and fruit for the residents of Senior Care Plaza.  And with our Leos, we spent a morning at Riverside Care Center singing Christmas carols and distributing fruit to the residents.

There will be more activities to come, so please check our Calendar Page regularly.
