The Long Island Portuguese Lions Club was established in November 1990. Our initial membership of 25 founders has since grown to over 100 members.
‘Lionism’ was borne out of a fundamental desire to provide assistance to the vision-impaired, the ill and underprivileged. As Lions, we strive to help struggling individuals in our community as well as provide funding for cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular research and financial aid to deserving organizations that serve our valiant returning soldiers and to various youth programs. Our club also regularly provides transportation for corneas to be used in sight-saving operations. In other words, we endeavor to make life just a little bit easier for others less fortunate than ourselves.
Each year the Long Island Portuguese Lions Club hosts a number of fundraising events to benefit our neighbors in the Mineola community and its surrounding towns who are struggling with severe illnesses and other hardships.
We have been actively fundraising for the past 25 years and 100% of proceeds provide assistance to those in need.
Some of the charities and organizations we support year after year include:
- Educational scholarships
- Camp Badger
- American Heart Association
- Seeing-eye dogs for the blind
- Guiding eyes for the blind
- American Cancer Association
- American Diabetes Association
- Wounded soldier project
- Guide dogs for independence
- Local pantry food drives
- Holiday baskets for families in need
- Independent family health crisis relief
