Jarvis Lions Meeting Monday June 14th, 2010

The Jarvis Lions Club held their regular meeting on Monday, June 14th, at the Jarvis Community Centre, This being the second from last meeting of the Lions year this is traditionally First Vice President’s Night where the upcoming President gets his feet wet by conducting a meeting, so First Vice, Lion Martyn Cooper called this meeting to order at 7 p.m. sharp. Everyone enjoyed a delicious meal served by the Wesley United Church Women’s Group featuring Ham, baked potatoes, carrots, coleslaw and fresh rolls, all topped off with an assortment of homemade pies.

Tail Twisters Lion Ian Cooper and Lion Doug McBride held a 50/50 draw that was won by Lion Jim Chanda.

Minutes from the previous regular meeting and Directors Meeting were read by Secretary, Lion Stew Patterson; followed by correspondence received since the last regular meeting.

1st Vice Lion Chief Martyn called for Committee Reports:

At a previous meeting there was a proposal from the Port Dover Lions Club for a food preparation venture at the Friday the 13th in August. A committee was formed to investigate this and Committee Chair Lion Tom Montague is making the necessary arrangements. He reported that he now has 24 Lions who can help out with this.

While on his feet Lion Tom also reminded the club that the “Evening With the Jarvis Lions” which will be held on Thursday September 23rd is coming up and already the tickets are over half sold. Lions that have requests for tickets are asked to contact Heather Bowen.

Lion Nick Montague reported that he will be setting up the work schedules for Cornfest Beer trailers and is asking that anyone that cannot help out to let him know.

Seniors Housing Committee Chair, Lion Jack Stallwood spoke on a recommendation from the Board of Directors regarding the committee’s proposed budget to hold public meetings to determine interest in the community for this project. Lion Jack estimated that a Sign, advertising, Lawn Bowling rental and promotional necessities will likely cost around $1,800. The Board of Directors recommended that the committee be allowed up to $2,000 to carry out these meetings.

Boys and Girls Committee Chair Lion Joe Feeney reported that he will be contacting the 4H clubs this coming week and will have information next meeting regarding the partnership arrangements for the Haldimand Motors Great Tricycle race in September.

Fundraising Committee member Lion Ron Binkley reported that the Nevada Ticket venture with Devine’s Restaurant is now in place. Lion Ron detailed the program to the club and made some recommendations as to how the proceeds can be handled according to the guidelines of the Lottery License.

MDA Convention Chair Lion Ken Smith reported that he and Ruth along with Lion Nick and Lynn Montague attended the MDA Convention in Kingston and they had a good time. Lion Ken reported that the MDA dues will be going up 50¢ next year per member.

While on his feet Lion Ken, who is also Float Committee Chair, reminded the club that his committee is planning on attending The Port Dover Parade on July 1st, the Fisherville Parade on July 10th and the Cayuga Parade July 17th. Mark your calendars.

Lion Stew Patterson put in a request for swimmers to attend and present the now infamous “Jarvis Lions Synchronized Swim Team” to the Port Dover Lions Club’s Annual Ladies Night, Tuesday, June 15th. He announced that there will be a 15 minute practice right after this meeting.

Lion Grant Dawson requested the club’s input regarding the Jarvis Food Bank. The facility they are now using has been sold and they have to relocate. It appears that there is nothing else available in Jarvis so they are looking at facilities in Hagersville and Nanticoke. Since the Jarvis Lions Club is one of their major supporters they are concerned that if they move out of town that our support may not continue. Some discussion evolved and it was felt that our club should continue to support them should they need to relocate out of town.

The 2010-11 Slate of Officers were then voted on. There was one vacancy that was created when Lion Tony Southworth withdrew as secretary citing other responsibilities that may not allow him to do the job adequately. Lion Ralph Fess stepped up and offered to take the position. This was voted on along with the entire slate of officers. Installation of these Officers will take place at the next regular meeting.

With no further business 1st Vice Lion Martyn called for adjournment at 8:20 pm.

Next regular meeting, Monday June 28th, 2010.
