JACKSON HOST LIONS CLUB

FIRST PROJECT KIDSIGHT SCREENING

ABC ACADEMY PRESCHOOL

The Jackson Host Lions Club set two goals for the year 2009/2010. Increase membership by 10% and adopt Project Kidsight as a child and community service project. We have added two of the five new members to reach the 10% goal and on on January 22, 2010 Project Kidsight Chairman Tom Heikkinen guided the club to conduct its initial preschool vision screening at ABC Academy on Lansing Avenue in Jackson. Through the excellent cooperation of ABC owner Kathy Hoszkin, Director Kelly Horsch and Miss Amy as well as Project Kidsight District 11-B1 Chairman Larry France the first screening was very successful. Last fall Larry conducted training for five Jackson Host members. Through the efforts of second vice president Cindy Allen, ABC Academy, with three locations in Jackson was selected for our Project Kidsight Preschool. We decided that our initial screening would be a modest number of preschoolers. We screened ten 3 to 5 year old's, another one had glasses and could not be screened while another whose parents completed the consent form was absent. Larry France expertly guided us through the initial effort. Jackson Host Lions Bob Oberst, Bob DuBois, Dick Colony and Chairman Tom Heikkinen conducted the screening. District Governor Terry Walters was a welcome observer and guest.

As an initial project the screening provided a forum for community members to help Lions and thus gain a better understanding of Lionism and it met a community need, thus qualifying as a District 11-B1 “Lion For A Day” project. Lion For A Day is an innovative public relations project adopted this year by the District Cabinet. Qualifying projects are provided with Tees for the community members, an easel provided by IPDG Roberta Sexton and sign boards.
