Financial Contributions to Charities:
Three fundraising projects--the Bill Smith Golf Outing and food concessions at the Johnny Appleseed Festival, Sol Fest --raise money for allocation to a range of charities.
In 2017-18, Fort Wayne Central Lions is supporting four vision-related charities: the League for the Blind and Disabled, Northeast Indiana Radio Reading Service, Matthew 25 Vision Services, Lea7der Dogs for the Blind; Science Central; ; four Indiana Lions State Projects: Cancer Control, the Lions Eye Bank, Speech and Hearing, and the Indiana School for the Blind; and the Lions Club International Foundation.
Vision Screening: Members screen approximately 2,200 pre-school students in Fort Wayne Community Schools annually. The club's wireless digital equipment makes 30 photos in seconds and indicates whether the child passes or should be referred to an ophthalmologist. The equipment can detect most problems that cause poor vision in young children during the critical years of vision formation which are ages one to six.
Book Distribution: The book distribution program is conducted in conjunction with the vision screening in approximately 25 Title I schools of the Fort Wayne Community Schools. This effort to promote literacy supports the Lions Clubs International Foundation's Reading Action Program. The LCIF initiated a 10-year worldwide literacy priority in 2012.
Assistance to Local Charities: The club assists fundraising efforts of the Salvation Army and the Workers for the Blind; the club adopts a Christmas Bureau Family and seniors through Santa for Seniors.
Youth Services: The club sponsors the Lions Clubs International Peace Poster Contest locally for middle school students and recognizes the participants at a reception; it recognizes participants in the Fort Wayne Community Schools Middle Schools Speech Contest at a luncheon. It supports Science Central as Sponsor of the Day and conducts vision screening on the premises; it supplies volunteers for Allen County Special Olympics. And, of course, the vision screening serves approximately 2,200 young children
annually.
