THE EVANS TOWNSHIP LIONS CLUB presents “DRIVING BLIND” - AN AWARD WINNING FEATURE FILM DOCUMENTARY on Tuesday, November 18, 2014 at 7:00 P.M. at The New Angola Theater, 72 North Main Street, Angola, NY.
“DRIVING BLIND - A FEATURE FILM DOCUMENTARY”
What is meant by “driving blind”? It’s a phrase that means you have no set plan, no direction, are going on an adventure that could involve the road less traveled, going where the wind and fortune take you.
What is the movie “driving blind?” This is a feature length documentary, the true story of two brothers diagnosed with Choroideremia, who decide to take one last trip together before losing their sight. It was produced and directed by three best friends who are originally from Buffalo, and, in their own words, “... is a portrait of what makes American beautiful, what really matters in life and what we - as human beings - do with our short time here.” They truly drive blind - both by definition of the phrase and because they are losing their sight to Choroideremia.
But what is Choroideremia? Known as “CHM” in the medical field it is a rare, inherited and incurable disorder that causes progressive loss of vision due to degeneration of the choroid (the vascular layer of the eye, containing connective tissue, and lying between the retina and the sclera) and the retina itself. The disorder occurs primarily in males and begins with night blindness, often in childhood, and a gradual loss of peripheral (side) vision which then narrows toward central vision until vision disappears. The progression of the disease can vary in both the degree of vision lost and the rate at which eye sight worsens. Dr. Ian MacDonald, Professor and Chair of the Department of Opthalmology and Visual Science at the University of Alberta, Canada, a leading researcher says: “At this time there is no treatment or cure for this disease. However, what we have is hope. ... We have already seen incredible advances made in CHM research. Now, it is no longer a question of IF a cure will be developed; it is a question of WHEN!”
Where can I see the movie? It is being offered FREE of charge (there will be donation baskets available) by the EVANS TOWNSHIP LIONS at the New Angola Theater, 72 North Main Street, Angola, NY, at 7PM on Tuesday, November 18, 2014. Refreshments will be available for purchase. All contributions will go toward research and cure of vision-robbing diseases.
