On May 22, the Dupont Lions Club
embarked on a road trip unlike any other
known in its history. The goal of the club
was to fill a tractor trailer with donations
for the PA Lions Beacon Lodge. The
Lodge is a five hundred acre summer camp
for children and adults with special needs
including blindness, deafness, and many
other physical and mental challenges. It is
located along the Juniata River of Central
Pennsylvania near Mount Union. Janet Rooney, a Dupont Lions member, and an employee in
the Vocational Services Division of Allied Services, was the chairperson. Allied Services
Vocational Services Division was the main source of these donations which included, office
furniture, trash liners, antibacterial soap with dispensers, flower pots, plastic craft trays, surgical
gloves, band aids and craft paper. The Vocational Services Division is a workshop for people
with disabilities. These individuals cleaned, packed, and help load the tractor trailer for Beacon
Lodge. Kane Warehousing and Trucking provide the use of a truck and also a driver. Other
donors included Letica Corporation, Maui Corporation, Cascades Tissue Group, Party Time
Manufacturing, Weinberg Food Bank and Joe Vullo. The results of this huge undertaking made
it the largest, single donation made by a Lion’s Club in the history of Beacon Lodge.
