DOUGLAS VALLEY LIONS CLUB
Since its formation in 1970 the Club has raised funds and provided hands-on help to the local community and to support overseas needs. The following list of typical
projects demonstrates the efforts of DVLC to maintain the Lions motto: ‘We Serve’.
MAJOR PROJECTS
- Blind Veterans UK
- Canal Environment Project – adoption of a section of the Leeds / Liverpool Canal
- Christmas hampers and toys for disadvantaged local families
- Regular support to local food banks
LOCAL WELFARE PROJECTS
- Funding of a special bed for a young lad with cerebral palsy
- Provision of riding tack and other equipment for the Parbold Riding for the Disabled group
- Collection for flood relief victims and provision of a supply of flood sacks for availablity in time of emergency
- Support to local organisations who provide help to refugees based in our area.
- Burscough Grove Centre – support for youth activities
- Provision of furniture and household appliances to disadvantaged families
- Sponsorship of local young people for Overseas Voluntary Service projects
- Support for local participants in the Special Olympics
- Provide transport for hospital visits
- Helped Parbold Cub Pack to carry out their project of sprucing up the appearance of Parbold Railway Station
NATIONAL & INTERNATIONAL PROJECTS
- By using the Lions International network in Australia ,DVLC provided accommodation and support to a local family to be near the hospital where their son who had suffered a severe road accident in Australia was receiving treatment.
- Donation to Hearing Dogs for the Deaf
- Donation to the RNLI
- EFDS (English Federation of Disability Sports)
- Distributed 1000s of Message In A Bottle packs.
- Collected 1000s of used spectacles for recycling
- Helped a local man provide a supply of rice to impoverished villages in the Gambia
- Donations to Lions International projects
- Water Aid - for water wells and water cleansing equipment
- Sight Savers - treatment of cataract and other sight threatening ailments
