Beryl Burris has been an educator for over thirty eight years with the Department of Education City of New York. She has taught elementary grades Pre-kindergarten through six and later served in supervisory positions. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Early Childhood Education from Mills College of Education and Master of Science degree in Education from Long Island University. As a recipient of Chancellor Greene's Assistant Principal's Internship program, she earned a Professional Certificate in School Administration from City College.
She was responsible for selecting and training Early Childhood program staff in seventeen schools in District 18 and seventy in Region7. Beryl believes that early years are learning years... make them count. With this mantra she selected appropriate, quality resources for staff, students and supervisors in the early grades.
She also selected and contracted with several Community Based Organizations to provide early childhood education services for our youngest population. She coopted on writing committees at districts and city levels publishing programs and books.
Beryl is currently retired and loves to travel. She has visited twelve countries to date and look forward to her future trips. She is actively involved in her church St. Mark (Episcopal) located in Brooklyn and also Bethlehem Teacher's College Alumnae (her alma mater) New York Chapter. She continues her membership in her professional affiliations — New York City Consortium of Early Childhood Educators, National Association of Supervisors for Curriculum Development (ASCD), Council of Supervisors and Administration (CSA)
Beryl was introduced to Lionism by the late PDG Hank of Crown Heights Lions Club. Her close relationship with the late Selma Barnabas (sister of Lion Jeanette Forde-Curwen) gave her further insight. At the invitation of Lion Jeanette to join the Lions Club she accepted. She believes that this will honor the memory of her dear friend and colleague Selma. She is a Charter Member of the Brookville Lions Club and held the position of Treasurer for the past three years. Beryl attended her first convention this year in Toronto, Canada. . She found the experience very stimulating and looks forward to attending future events.
