Featured Global Cause: Vision

As part of the Lions KidsSight USA campaign, we have for many years been providing free eye screenings for local children in our community, including Bloomfield and also Honeoye. This simple non-invasive quick screening with a specialized camera can immediately determine if the child has a vision issue. Vision problems do not hurt like a toothache, they go unnoticed as the child will compensate as they do not know what they can not see!

This screening does not take the place of a comprehensive eye exam but does typically happen prior to any doctor or school vision testing. Geared for kids from 6 months old up to about the age of 6, if we can find an issue there is a high rate of success of fixing the issue. After the age of 6, the eye has fully developed.

In 2013 in Bloomfield, our eye screening detected an abnormality in a kindergartener’s eye, which lead to early detection of a cancerous tumor that saved the girl's life!  Typically, about 10% of children screened have abnormalities detected and are recommended for further testing. Some of the eye diseases that this screening will test for are Hyperopia (far-sightedness) Anisometropia (lazy-eye), myopia (near-sightedness), media opacity, astigmatism, and strabismus (crossed-eyes). The sooner that these diseases are detected, the easier it is to medically treat the problem before permanent damage can occur.

The Lion’s Club feels that this is a terrific opportunity to screen our children to detect any eye diseases at the earliest time possible. There are no costs associated with this vision screening for the child or the parents. In the event that funding is not available for further testing if a child does not pass the screening, the Lions Club can assist with that also.

Presently we do free screenings at:

Bloomfield Elementary School Pre-K and K classes

Bloomfield Nursery School

Honeoye Elementary School K classes

Honeoye Nursery School
