The school rating system is more about the teachers and school districts getting their funding. It does not help to produce a quality education for our children. In addition, education at a young age is greatly dependent on the child’s home life. Parents and family play a significant role in the ability of a child to not only learn but to be motivated and enthusiastic about education. The schools are currently focused on their ratings??

It has schools more confused than ever before. They are judged meeting a moving target for goals and scores.

I think a change needed made. Any professional evaluation should provide good feedback for areas of improvement and goals. Sadly, the Laura Bush "no child left behind" philosophy downgraded an entire generation of learning. Kids were being taught to master the standardized tests but neglect to basic math principles were not being taught over the last several years. Teachers began focusing on the bottom of the classroom to keep scores up. Children at the top of class (one of my own who scored perfect on the elementary standard tests) were left unchallenged and given option to have free time or tutor others. Very heartbreaking when teacher tells you your child is not a priority they have to focus on the other 20 kids in class. Now with the new system every child progress is a priority. However the biggest problem in the change is the district comparison studies and applying the added value assessment to district where kids do not have many kids with a large area of improvement. For example an overall proficient school can remain the same or get slightly better and receive poor results because individual students have not achieved much change in their test scores.

Incomplete and inadequate evaluation process- too simplistic.

It's about time

PRESS RELEASE:

The Youngstown Lions Club and the Poland Howard Hanna Real Estate agents donated back packs and supplies to Paul C. Bunn, Harding, Martin Luther King, William McGuffey, and Taft Elementary Schools . They didn’t want any child to be without a back pack when school starts. When the Howard Hanna agents learned what the Lions were doing, they wanted to be part of it. Pictured are just some of the agents who donated and just some of the Lions who delivered the back packs. People from both organizations were already thinking up ideas for next year!
