March 6, 2014

King Lion Nancy welcomed an excellent crowd and our pro singer, Tony led us in God Bless America. Our invocation included a prayer for world leaders to resolve the conflicts in those war torn countries.

INTRODUCTIONS

Pete introduced his guest Dr. John Beal, a past 40 year member to the South Side Lion's Club. Jodi introduced the new Executive Director of Easter Seals.

Even without Roger our table had its usual political debate. Some one noticed that Doug was absent so we introduced ourselves in the wrong order.

SWEAT HEART PARTY

We all thanked Jeanne for the nice party and she deserves a GOLD STAR for arranging it.

DISTRICT CONVENTION

Ron thanked Pete and Jeanne for their gifts and Nancy for providing 300 leis. (I think that's the proper spelling.) He has received $400.00 worth of gifts so far.

LAW DAY

Law day will be May 1st and we already have 12 lions signed up.

RAFFLE

Bill Bennett won but was absent. Bill, we meet every Thursday. Come and see us.

MELVIN E JONES AWARD

The past recipients of this award will meet on March 13th at the MVR club to consider another recipient. There will be no regular meeting that day.

COOK BOOK

Nancy has arranged a meeting of the ladies to make a cookbook that could be sold with the funds going to our club. (Maybe I could use one as all I know how to make is cheerios.)

TAILTWISTER

Pete reminded us of the party next week at The Upstairs Lounge at 6:30. (That's PM not AM.) He brought a 1987 Jargon.  Roger was king lion, Pete was membership chairman and ran a marathon. Ron Ameen was tail twister and was voted Mr. Congeniality if you can imagine that. Bryan was the Jargon editor.

SPEAKER

Our speaker was Senator Joe Schiavoni. His district is Mahoning and Columbiana counties. There are 33 senators and 2 representatives in Ohio. His main goal is to improve the quality of life in his district and to grow the communities. We had many questions for Joe and he answered them very well. Another good speaker provided by Heather and she deserves a GOLD STAR for being chairman for so many years.

GOOD NEWS

Sunday the days will be longer and it's only 14 days until spring.

BAD NEWS

During the meeting I got a ticket for parking too close to a cross walk.

After passing out her candy, the King of the Lions welcomed a nice crowd in spite of the weather. Our invocation included a prayer for all those in poverty that need food and shelter and for those that provide it.

INTRODUCTIONS

George Kolesar returned from the south. Checked the weather and is going back next week

BOARD REPORT

Getch gave the board report as follows:

GENERAL FUND

After seven months ending January 31st, our income was $10,477 and after expenses we had a deficit of ($158). Last year at this time we had a positive net of $748. Our assets include a reserve of $3,158 for the Merz scholarship. We have 4 members with delinquent dues.

Due in part because of the increased cost of our meals, our monthly rental at the Y and better attendance, we have to increase our income. The board approved an increase in our dues from $80.00 to $90.00 per quarter. Our at large members’ dues will be increased from $65.00 to $90.00 per year.

Ron Serich reviewed the books of the general fund and found no discrepancies. This is done on an annual basis and made part of our records.

SIGHT SAVINGS REPORT

Since Bryan is cruising the high seas, Getch gave the sight savings report. After seven months of our fiscal year, we had income of $5,875 and disbursements of $17,511. Our cash balance is $21,316 and last year at this time it was $16,785.

CONTRIBUTIONS

We approved $575 to send a local visually handicapped child to The VIP Sports Camp.

We approved $7,000 for the parade of checks which is the same amount as last year.

RAFFLE

Brian Hughes won the big bucks.

TAIL TWISTER

Our faithful tail twister didn't like George's sweater or Jerry's tie but didn't say anything about Getch's shirt this time. He again picked on the "boring table" and had a good one about a killer dog at a funeral. Good Job.

BOWLING REPORT

We won one out of three but did qualify for the playoffs. (Their doing better than the Cavs)

CONVENTION

Ron Clifton thanked Pete Noll for his generous gifts for the convention and Nancy for providing 300 welcome leis. Ron is doing a lot of work for the convention and deserves a GOLD STAR for his efforts.

SPEAKER

Mark Callion is a community development representative for Congressman Tim Ryan. Tim has 715,000 people in his district and has four offices including one in Youngstown and one in Warren. He is on many important committees that has given him the ability to help the local community. He graduated from JFK, played football at YSU and has a law degree. His salary is $174,000 and he is required to own two homes, one in his district and one in Washington. All of his offices are staffed with employees that have expertise in different areas.

Our Lion King welcomed everyone who braved the rain instead of the snow. Doug led us in God Bless America and our invocation included a prayer that all world leaders will work toward peace especially in those war torn countries.

Doug again talked about his new enterprise that no one can understand. Doug, you should bring us a new flow chart and power point to explain it. (On second thought, never mind.)

ZONE MEETING

Getch said the Hubbard club did a good job and it was a good meeting.

DISTRICT CONVENTION

Ron thanked Heather and Jeanne for the gifts for the giveaway bags.

BOWLING REPORT

Our team is improving and moving toward another championship.

RAFFLE

Lori Durkin could have been the big winner, but was absent so the big bucks rides.

OUTREACH

Nancy wants us to remember that Goodwill still needs coats, gloves and other clothing in good condition. There are many people using the Rescue Mission and they are in dire need of sheets, blankets and pillow cases.

The St. Vincent DePaul kitchen can always use coffee, paper towels and napkins.

If we can help any one of the above they will appreciate it.

FUTURE EVENTS

Sweet heart dinner February 28th at 6:30pm at Springfield Grill. Tail Twister party March 13th at 6:30pm at The Upstairs Lounge.

TAILTWISTER

Our astute tail twister felt sorry for Jeanne as she had to sit at the boring table. He's still talking about Getch's shirts and he had a "Tom Doctor" joke about Chicken Little. He said that I dressed better last week, but I still passed. I think next week I will wear a suit and tie to make him happy.

FINANCE

Diane explained some of the ideas that her committee will discuss and ask for approval at Monday's board meeting. All are invited.

SPEAKER

Our scheduled speaker canceled.

TAILTWISTER

Pete told us a new way to open a beer bottle. (Diane paid attention to his one.) He is still picking on Getchy shirts. He had some good Valentine jokes. He complimented me on the way I was dressed and I was very appreciative until he said that it was unusual for me. Another great job (except when he picks on me.)

FINANCE COMMITTEE

Diane met with her ad hoc finance committee to find a way for our general fund to break even. We had a good discussion and will present our recommendations at the February 24th board meeting. Diane deserves a GOLD STAR for all of her work as club treasurer.

SPEAKER

Todd Franko, the editor of the Vindicator spoke about the Simeon Booker Group. Simeon is 95 years old and for most of his life he was a reporter in the south. He exposed the many atrocities and prejudices against the blacks in the Deep South. He was a leader in changing these and once received a thank you letter from Dr. Martin Luther King for his efforts.

Simeon enrolled in Youngstown College in 1937 and left after one year as he was forbidden from participating in some of the activities. Because of his great lifelong work he was recently given an honorary doctors degree from YSU.

RAFFLE

Our esteemed tail twister won the big bucks.

FINANCE MEETING

Diane's committee met last Thursday to get ideas on increasing income or decreasing expenses. We will need about $1,500 more per year to remain solvent. This was caused by increased attendance (that's a good thing.) and the increased cost of lunches. We will meet again after next week's meeting and then make our recommendations to the board at the next board meeting.

BOARD MEETING

Our February board meeting has been changed again and will now be on February 24th.

TAILTWISTER

Pete was in full swing. He said he felt sorry for Heather because she was sitting at a boring table. He picked on Doug and told about Bubba who had a problem with shingles. Another good job by the master blaster.

SPEAKER

Our speaker was Allison Oltmann from the American Heart Association. They are the largest medical association in the country and provide research, development, and education. Heart problems are the leading cause of death in America.

She passed out a very informative letter on warning signs and ways to prevent heart attacks and strokes. It also included a proper diet. They have 3 fund raisers per year. There is an article about former president Jimmy Carter who is a very active lion in Georgia. He said that he is very grateful to be able to be a lion.

SPEAKER

Our speaker was Kim Boccia the Marketing Coordinator for the Phantoms Hockey team. Kim was originally from Poland and then moved to California. She returned here as it is a better place to raise her children.

TAIL TWISTER

Pete must have been on diaper duty again so Roger AKA Don Rickles did the honors. He did his usual great job as he picked on every one including your poor old editor. He said that the only machine I could use at the gym to impress the ladies was the ATM.

AWARDS

Congratulations to 3 of our lions as Tom presented them with a letter from our international president for their time as lions. Don Mathews 25 years, Pete Noll 15 years and Ron Serich 10 years.

SPEAKER

Tom stressed the importance of member retention. He said it is easier to get new members than retain present members. He said that sponsors should always contact their members when they are absent from several meetings. He also stressed the importance of publicity as it helps to bring in new members and tells all of the good things that we do. He also reminded us that we will never get a new member if we don't ask.

Don't forget our board meeting on Monday and our meeting at Park Vista on Thursday to honor Ted.

December 19, 2013

Vice President Adam welcomed everyone and Diane led us in God Bless America. Our invocation included a prayer that all of our service men and women will be home by next Christmas.

INTRODUCTIONS

As a Christmas present for Doug we all went in the proper order.

REPORTS

Getch reminded us of the district convention in March, our visit to Park Vista on January 16th and our board meeting on January 13th.

RAFFLE

Our newest member Kyle could have won his first raffle, but he was absent.

TAILTWISTER

Pete told about Jerry and Kathy shopping together. He congratulated Jack for making two consecutive meetings and then asked Roger to tell his famous marine story about Ode Kraja. As always a good job by a good tail twister.

ARTICLE

In the years ago section of last week's Vindicator there was an article about us. In 1938 the Youngstown Lions Club hosted 60 totally blind children from the local schools at their annual Christmas party.

This year we had about 120 children and only about 3 were totally blind. This shows how successful Eye Research, The Eye Foundation, and eye screening have been. This is a good example of how the lions have helped to reduce blindness in children.

SPEAKERS

Our speakers were Sergeant Montano and Corporal Baird of the Marine Corp. They told us about the marine's "toys for tots" program. It began 76 years ago and they have given more than twelve thousand toys to needy children annually in our area. They thanked us for bringing in toys today.

There are 11 marines stationed at the local air base and they have about 20 volunteers that help them. The marines at the air base train marine reserves.

CHRISTMAS PARTY EDITION

On Monday evening we had a brief board meeting, dinner and Santa's Elves wrapped 120 presents and stuffed 120 bags with scarves, gloves, pencils and candy. (Nancy and Adam shopped for everything in the bags.) Thanks to the organization and expertise of Getch and Patti we finished in about one hour.

Wednesday's 93rd party was a huge success. We began with Adam leading us in the pledge and Tony did a great job in leading us in God Bless America. Our invocation included a blessing on the wonderful children and their teachers and mentors.

After dinner we introduced the head table and our district and past district governors and their wives. We also introduced Paul McFadden, the president of The YSU Foundation who helps us with our scholarships. We recognized Virginia Ayers who has attended over 75 consecutive parties. (She must be older than me.)

Mike Bosela thanked us for all that we do for Goodwill and the Radio Reading Service. Then our scholarship recipient Amelia Cornell gave a nice talk and thanked us for her scholarship.

While our disc jockey played Christmas songs Santa Claus AKA as Ed Brant and Mrs. Claus whose maiden name is Heather Belgin came and did a great job in visiting every table. All the kids were thrilled to see them.

Santa and his helpers gave out 120 of the presents that the kids selected and the goody bags.

It was a great party and chairman Adam and his committee deserve a big GOLD STAR for all of their hard work in making it a success.

SEE YA ALL NEXT THURSDAY

It was a great party

King Lion Nancy welcomed a nice crowd and Tony with his great voice led us in God Bless America. Our invocation included a prayer for the victims of those terrible tornados in Illinois and Indiana. (Roger said that we should pray for the Browns but God can only do so much.)

INTRODUCTIONS

When we introduced ourselves we each said what we were thankful for this Thanksgiving. Most responses were family, friends and health.

REPORTS

Jeanne passed out a signup sheet for the loge at the Phantoms hockey game at 7:00 on January 24th.

Nancy thanked the good lions that served lunch at The St. Vincent DePaul food kitchen on Wednesday.

She reminded the Christmas committee that the purchase of items for the gift bags is November 26th.

She added that everyone is invited to Ron Ameen’s house for dinner next Thursday.

Ron Clifton would like to have a large turnout at the district convention on March 21st through the 23rd. This year we need workers to help with the convention.

BOWLING

Captain Reese said we lost all three games. It was also reported that Diane quit drinking beer. (The breweries might have to close.) Roy is on his way to California and will miss a few matches.

RAFFLE

I can't believe I haven't won in two weeks. Justin Kuhn was the big winner and can now buy Ashley a Christmas present.

TAILTWISTER

Our master blaster was on the ball as usual. He picked on someone at every table including Roger and his race horse. He said that Pat was very stingy with the salad she passed out at St. Vincent's kitchen.

SPEAKER

Our speaker was Ron Starcher from the Rescue Mission. He said that they have to help more people every year. Last year in October they had 73 residents and this year it is 113. At one time they had 133.

They desperately need a new facility. Their building was built in 1930 as a YMCA and it only has 4 toilets and 7 showers to serve all of those people. They serve 3 meals a day to residents and others.

They have a budget of 1.8 million and their only funding is from donations. (That says a lot about the generosity or our community. They have 30 full time employees and 12 volunteers. They have some land on the south side and hope to build a new facility in the future. Nancy presented Ron with a check for $1,200.

HAVE A GREAT THANKSGIVING EVERYONE.

King Lion Nancy welcomed a nice crowd and Diane led us in song. Our invocation included a prayer for the victims of that tragedy in The Philippines.

INTRODUCTIONS

Nancy introduced her guest and co-worker, Virginia Rodolphi, a potential member. We welcomed back our star speaker chairman Heather after a brief absence.

Our table really messed up the introductions. (They made me do it, Doug,)

BOWLING REPORT

Diane said we won all 3 games even without our star, Captain Reese.

REPORTS

Getch said that we will have 6 lions attending the zone meeting.

Nancy gave the names of those in charge of picking up glasses from the various locations. We have many and Ron Clifton will arrange getting them to the proper place.

Next week we will bring clothing and/or food for The Rescue Mission. Our speaker will be Ron Startcher from The Mission.

OOPS

The Christmas committee will buy gifts for the bags at the party on November 21st. In the last jargon I said it would be on December 21st.

RAFFLE

I was disappointed that I didn't win this week. Jim Ellashek name was called and the money rides. Come and see us, Jim we miss you.

TAILTWISTER

Pete had a good attorney joke and everyone laughed but Jerry. He usually has one about a priest, but this year it was about a rabbi. Now he will have to have one about a minister so he can be ecumenical. He did have one "Tom Doctor" joke.

LION'S SERVICE

On Wednesday 7 good lions will serve lunch at St. Vincent DePaul's kitchen.

SPEAKER

Our speaker was Ron Starcher from Goodwill. His primary position is with the radio reading service. They have radios in homes of the visually handicapped and in nursing facilities. Over 1200 people use them in the 3 county area. He sets up the radios and handles all of the technology.

He is also involved in eye screening for preschool children. They have screened 1200 children and referred 500 for further examinations. If they can find a problem at a young age, it is easier to correct.

He asked that we consider a $1,500 donation to facilitate digital equipment. This would help them get more funds form the state.

Ron thanked us for the many years that we have supported Goodwill and the reading service.

King Lion Nancy welcomed a nice crowd and Diane led is in song. In honor of Veteran's day our invocation included a prayer for those that gave up their lives and those that have disabilities.

INTRODUCTIONS

Nancy introduced her guest, Virginia Rudolphi from Remax Realty. We introduced ourselves so far out of order that Doug looked like he was going to cry. We welcomed back Ron Ameen as our table had been entirely too peaceful.

BOARD REPORT

Getch gave the board report as follows:

Diane gave the general fund report. Our assets are$6,998 including $3,158 reserved for the Rita Merz scholarship. Four months into our fiscal year our income after expenses is $1,282. Last year at this time it was $1,057. We have five members with delinquent dues. According to our by- laws one member was eliminated from the club for non-payment of dues.

Bryan gave the sight savings report. After income and disbursements our balance is $30,541 and last year at this time it was $25,656. Thus far this year we have disbursed $8,286 and last year it was $6,708. (Diane and Bryan do a great job in handling and reporting on these reports.)

We approved the membership of Kyle Miasek subject to final posting. Frank Clinton is going to resign and his resignation will have to be accepted at our next board meeting.

We approved a donation to Easter Seals that may be used to purchase a washer and dryer or for any other good purpose.

POSTING

This will be the final posting for the membership of Kyle Miasek. Anyone objecting to his membership should contact Secretary Getchey giving the reasons for their objection.

BOWLING REPORT

They were reluctant to report that they lost to The Canfield Rotary but did win at beer consumption.

RAFFLE

It's hard to believe but I won again. (I can now eat again without using my food stamps.)

GLASSES

Ron Clifton suggested that we bring all of our eye glasses to the next zone meeting for distribution. He also asked that a representative remain after the meeting to discuss helping at the next district convention.

REMINDER

Nancy reminded us to bring coats and clothes to the next meeting to give to our speaker from Good Will.

TAILTWISTER

After complaining about his tooth extraction and babysitting, Pete had two great jokes about a divorced couple and one about a guy's cow that was like his wife. He also picked on poor me for winning the raffle.

SPEAKER

Monica Craven is the Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity. This a national organization that began in 1976 and have built over 6,000 homes. There have been 43 homes built here and we build from 2 to 4 homes per year. They are built be mostly volunteers and then sold to low income families at the appraised value. They take a mortgage and receive payments according to their income.

The owners must help with the construction and take classes on home ownership, budgeting, etc. If they can't make the payments Habitat takes the home back and resells it.

Their funds to build the homes and furnish them are from foundations and donations. We should discuss helping them as it seems like a worthy cause.

Monica was an excellent speaker and can be reached at 330-743-7244.

CHRISTMAS PARTY

Adam asked for volunteers to meet on December 21st at The Dollar Store in Boardman at 6:00PM to shop for gift bag items and then have dinner.

King Lion Nancy with her Halloween custom that lit up, aka known as "the glow girl" welcomed a nice crowd and Diane led us in song. Our invocation included a prayer for Sister Mary Alyce, our speaker from The Beatitude House.

INRODUCTIONS

Roger brought his guest, Kyle Miasek who is joining our club. Roger gets a big GOLD STAR for bringing in a new member. As membership chairman he practices what he preaches.

John's guests were Christy Ash and Gary Dodrill from Rehabilitation Services. They help handicapped people secure jobs and remain in their homes. Many of their clients are visually handicapped.

BOWLING REPORT

Captain Reese said they bowled against their major rival, Boardman Rotary and lost the first game. They then bought in more beer and won the next two. After the beer Diane had two great games.

RAFFLE

Jim Ciccone would have won and we were all surprised that he wasen't at the meeting.

TAILTWISTER

Pete apologized for not telling his best jokes because Sister Mary Alyce was in attendance. He commented on the various tables and picked on Jerry, Ron and your poor old editor. He also talked about God building a bridge. Good job as always.

MEMBERSHIP

This will be the first posting for the membership of Kyle Miasek. Anyone objecting should contact Secretary Getchey with the reasons for their objection.

SPEAKER

Sister told us about the Beatitude House that began in 1991 by The Ursiline Sisters and have transformed the lives of many women and children. They provide apartments and homes for women with children that are homeless, poorly educated or have incurred battered lives.

They have now have 63 facilities in Youngstown, Warren and Ashtabula. While in their care the women receive education, tutoring, counciling and how to become productive citizens. There are many examples of women who were living in their cars or at The Rescue Mission and are now registered nurses, teachers, social workers, etc. All they needed was a chance and this great oranization provides that chance.

Nancy reminded us to bring in clothing and food during November that will be donated for thanksgiving.

I heard that Diane was fired from a beer tasting job. The brewery gave her 5 glasses of beer and asked her which one she liked the best. She said I loved them all.

King Lion Nancy welcomed everyone including First District Governor Barbara Sorkin and her friend Lion Doc Turner. Nancy led us in song and our invocation included a prayer for all world leaders to make good decision. (Diane said we should start praying for our bowling team.)

DONATIONS

Nancy asked us to bring clothing and can goods to the next meetings and give them to our speakers on November 14th and 21st.

RAFFLE

Bill Cooper could have won the loot but was absent. Bill, you could have bought a few rounds at Sam's Wedge Inn.

CONGRATULATIONS

Did you see the nice engagement picture of Diane's daughter in the Vindicator?

BOWLING REPORT

Diane said that we are "improving".

TAILTWISTER

Pete was at his usual best. He asked our football star, Bill Ruggles if he really did graduate from YSU and what easy courses he took. He bragged about his haircut. He said he was upset when I said that Roger brought down the house when he was tail twister. (Don't worry Pete we love you too.)

CORRECTION

I know it is hard to believe but I made a mistake in last week's Jargon. I reported that Roger returned from San Francisco and it was really Roy Reese. (Roger returned from Youngstown's south side.)

SPEAKER

First District Governor Barbara Sorkin talked about new membership and member retention. She recommended that we call members when they have missed several meetings.

She described the events that will take place at our winter retreat on the 17th, 18th and 19th of January at Deer Creek State Park. She encouraged us to attend. She also recommended that we attend other club meetings whenever possible.

SPORTS

Do you ever wonder if the "sports gods" hate Cleveland? The Indians haven't won a world series since 1948. The Browns are one of the few teams that have never been in the super bowl and the Cavs have never won a championship.

INTRODUCTONS

Roger's guest was Kyle Miasek, the city's deputy finance director. Diane had 2 guests, Nancy Voitis from Catholic Charities and Shirley Christian with the law firm of Harrington, Hoppe and Mitchell. Roger returned from San Francisco where his wife walked over the Golden Gate Bridge. (He was afraid to follow her.)

RAFFLE

Jeanne won all the loot and now she can buy more HS&L stock.

BOARD REPORT

Getch gave the board report as follows:

Diane gave the general fund report. Three months into the fiscal year we have a net deficit after income and expenses of $739. This was due in part because of better attendance and the increased meal cost. Last year the deficit was $498. Hopefully we can make it up later in the year. We have one member with delinquent dues and if not corrected will have to be dismissed from the club.

Getch gave the sight savings report. Year to date we have a balance of $32,841 after receipts and disbursements. Last year at this time it was $24,485.

We approved $1,000 to Goodwill for our eye glass program.

Bill Cooper suggested we consider giving funds for small purchases such as fire extinguishers etc for homes built by Habitat for Humanity. We will invite a speaker to see what they need.

Adam brought us up to date on the Christmas party.

Due to Veterans Day, next month’s board meeting will be on November 4th rather than November 11th. PLEASE MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR THE CHANGE.

TAILTWISTER

Roger did the honors. He picked on Doug even though he was absent and gave his annual toilet paper king poem for Bryan. I still think that Roger missed his calling and should have been a standup comedian. He could have made more money in Vegas than he did as a credit manager.

BOWLING REPORT

Captain Reese said they have to increase their beer intake as they have just been fair so far this year.

PUMPKINS

Nancy and Pat delivered decorated pumpkins to The Rescue Mission, The Beatitude House and to Ted Cubbison and others at Park Vista. They both deserve GOLD STARS for being so thoughtful.

SPEAKER

Doctor Randy Dunn the president of YSU was our speaker. He has been here for 100 days. YSU will concentrate on enrollment by more marketing and demographics, on engagement by helping the quality of life in our area and on becoming an excellent university.

Their annual budget is about 150 million and they are facing a deficit this year of 6.5 million. He is very positive about their future as we are currently rated in the top one third of university's of our size.

It was great to see that we now have a microphone and podium for our head table. We can now actually hear our speakers.

INTRODUCTIONS

We welcomed back Dennis McMahon and Jeanne Watson-Antol.

CONGRATULATIONS

Past District Governor John Woodside presented the prestigious 100% secretary award to John Getchey. Not many secretaries qualify for this award and we knew that Getch would get one for he is one of the best. He gets a well deserved GOLD STAR. John was absent so Patti accepted the award. Someone said that she does all of his work anyway.

Did you see our star banker's picture in the Vindicator? Pete Noll was promoted to Vice President of Farmers National Bank.

We also had a nice picture of our lions at the eye screening. (Great PR for the club)

RAFFLE

Your editor was the lucky winner and now I can buy food for another week.

MEMBERSHIP

Roger was disappointed that we have had no guests at the last several meetings. He reported that we will lose another member as Frank Clinton is transferring to either Boardman or Poland as they meet in the evenings.

TAILGATE PARTY

Jeanne told us about the tailgate party on October 19th and the homecoming parade. Jerry reminded us that there is also a football game.

TAILTWISTER

Pete was at his usual best. He had some good ones except the one that Ron Ameen sent him. If there is a tailtwister award, Pete should get one.

SPEAKER

PDG John Woodside thanked us many times for our generous donations to Eye Care and Pilot Dogs. He said that last year all 53 district clubs contributed to Eye Care. They have been averaging over $45,000 per year to help those that need eye care when the local clubs cannot help. He thanked Doug for representing our club.

Pilot Dogs began in 1950 and there are now about 150 nationwide. There are 12 in our district. The puppies live with a family for 14 months and are treated as any other pet. They then are given to a professional trainer to become a pilot dog.

To qualify a person has to be legally blind and be able to care for the dog. All of the needed funds are provided by donations and there is no cost to the recipient.

BOARD MEETING

Our board meeting is on Monday and all members are welcome to attend.

BUCKEYES

A guy in Columbus saved a girl's life by killing a dog that was attacking her. A reporter said that the headline will read "Buckeye fan saves little girl's life."  The guy said that he is from Michigan and he hates the Buckeyes.

The headline read "Punk from Michigan kills family pet."

Let's have a great crowd next week as our speaker will be Dr. Randy Dunn the president of YSU.

INTRODUCTIONS

Ed Brant returned from cruising the high seas and we also welcomed back Heather after a brief absence. Nancy had Diane stand and show us her Brown's shirt as she is going to the game tonight. Diane was concerned about the price of beer at the game.

PUMPKINS

We can still bring in pumpkins next week. Nancy delivered some to the Beatitude House this week.

RAFFLE

Getch was the winner, but he is in California. If he was here he could have paid for his vacation. Ron Serich won a basket that our speaker brought, and he tried to sell it for a dollar.

TAILTWISTER

Pete was at his best today. He and Roger compared similar smart phones to see which one was best. (My cell phone is so dumb that I can only call people on it) He teased Ed about his cruise and Brian about girls of ill repute. He asked for a show of hands on whether the democrats or republicans are causing the government shutdown and no one responded. We netted $28,910 a new record. Bryan had the most sales at $3,450. Jerry had $1,825 and Ted Cubbison had $1,800. (Ted is 92 years old and in a nursing home and had the third highest sales.) What a guy. We had 9 members with sales of over $1,000. It was also nice to see that some members that can't attend most of our meetings did contribute to the derby.

Here is proof of how good our present members can sell. In 1979 we had nearly 100 members and our net income was $$7,676. This year with 52 members our net was $28,910.

ZONE MEETING

We had 5 members that attended and Nancy gave a report on all of our activities. We screened 667 people at the Canfield Fair and 113 were referred for a follow up exam.

GAME AND TAILGATE PARTY

Lorrie Durkin has arranged a tailgate party for the YSU homecoming game on October 16th,

TAILTWISTER

Pete said that our small crowd was not due to the speaker, but because Doug was attending. He picked on Ron, Diane, and Roger. He said that Roger's purple shirt reminded him of Easter and Roger said that anyone dressed like Pete should not make fun of other people’s clothes. (It's great to hear two great tail twisters pick on each other)

ST. VINCENT DEPAUL

We now have a sufficient number of people to serve there from 9:30 to 12:30 on November 20th.

SPEAKER

Bob Hannon, the president and CEO of the local United Way told us about their successes in our community. This year's goal is 2.5 million and we should meet this goal. He said that 46% of the funds are raised through workplace contributions and 19% are from corporate gifts. All funds stay in the Mahoning Valley.

Rather than just raising and donating money, UW has initiated an 'impact program" were they help people with things other than funds. One example is helping nearly 600 children get ready for kindergarten and there are many others.

Bob is doing an excellent job at UW and is also well known as the broadcaster for all of YSU football games. He was formerly the sports director of WYTV.

King Lion Nancy welcomed a nice crowd and after our song, our invocation included a prayer for those victims in Syria and we prayed that all world leaders will make the right decisions in that area.

INTRODUCTIONS

It was nice to see Josie who has been working out of town. At Roger's suggestion, when we introduced ourselves we named those who sponsored us when we joined the club. A nice touch.

BOARD REPORT

Diane gave the general fund report. After 2 months our gross revenue was $4,177 and after expenses our net gain was $81.80. Last year at his time it was $185.81. We have one member with delinquent dues and a final letter will be sent for payment.

After 2 months the cash balance in our sight savings account was $32,291 and last year at this time it was $27,207. We have disbursed $5,836 and last year we disbursed $2,795 at this time.

We approved a donation of $250 to the local Alzheimer Network.

We approved a budget of $5,500 for this year's Christmas party. There was a discussion about this large percentage of funds for one function, but we decided to leave the party as is.

We agreed to have about seven members serve at The St. Vincent kitchen from 9:30 am to 12:30 on Wednesday November 20th.The first members to sign up with Nancy will serve. We also discussed serving at the Rescue Mission.

It was suggested that we give a certificate to each of the turtle derby race winners.

RAFFLE

The winner would have been Ray Soccorsy. Ray has been a member for over 30 years, but is unable to attend meetings.

DON'S SURVEY

Do you favor the United States attacking Syria? Yes 13.3% No 85.7%

If the United States strikes Syria do you think that will stop the gas strikes? Yes 28.6% No 71.4%

There will several comments. One said that we would be better served if we attacked Washington.

TAILWISTER

Pete asked everyone to describe Nancy in one word. The winner was "vibrant" I still think that "glow girl" is a good one. Pete challenged Roger to a joke contest and they tied. Roger's was about a West Virginia lady that couldn't hear well and Pete again picked on poor me. I'll bet we have the two best tail twisters in the district.

SPEAKER

Roger gave a great talk on the need for new members to remain a viable club. When he became membership chairman we had 46 members and we now have 52. We brought in 14 new members but have some losses. He is concerned that we could lose about 9 more.

He asked that we invite guests and then follow up with requests to join. He said that no one will join our club unless they are invited. It was suggested that we contact the CEO's of companies and ask that they appoint someone in their organization to join. He again has approval to award a restaurant gift certificate of $25.00 to any one that sponsors a member.

ROGER CANNOT DO ALL OF THIS HIMSELF, SO LETS ALL GIVE IT OUR BEST EFFORT TO INCREASE OUR MEMBERSHIP.

King Lion Nancy hit the bell and Getch led us in God Bless America. Our invocation included a prayer for Ted Cubbison and for those victims in Syria. We prayed that all world leaders will make the right decisions in that area.

INTRODUCTIONS

We welcomed back Ron Ameen after his successful surgery. He said he applied for Obama care but was turned down. We also welcomed back PDG Ron Clifton who used the excuse that he was working.

RAFFLE

Lucky Bill Ruggles won the loot after also winning all the money at the Turtle Derby. (You should start playing the lottery, Bill.)

EYE SCREENING

We recommended 114 people that were screened to see their doctor. (Doug did not operate on anyone.)

ZONE MEETING

If you want to attend the zone meeting hosted by the Girard club, contact Getch.

TAILTWISTER

Pete did his usual good job by picking on just about everyone including your poor old editor. He had one "Tom Doctor" joke, but at least I didn't send it to him.

DON'S SURVEY

Public schools are now rated by a letter grade (A, B, C, D and F). Have you seen or heard of this new evaluation?     Yes 77.8%      No 22.2%

If yes, which statement describes your thoughts?   I can understand it 86.4%   I cannot understand it13.6%

Which statement best describes how you like the rating system?   I like it 12.5%, neither liked nor dislikes it 75.0% and I do not like it12.5%.

LADIES

Our international president is a strong advocate of having ladies in our clubs. He said that we now have 24.5% and he would like to have 30% this year and 50% by 2017. We now have 24.5 % in our club. Our ladies have been outstanding and in my opinion saved our club.

Four have been King Lions, three have been turtle derby chairmen, one is speaker chairmen, one is social chairmen, one is treasurer, one is vice president, two have been publicity chairmen, and four have chaired the Christmas party. They all get a GOLD STAR.

SPEAKER

Nate Dukes gave us many facts and figures on the social media. These included face book, computers, U tube, cell phones, I pods, tweeters etc. (It sounds like in the near future no one will talk to each other.)

PUBLICITY

Did you see the nice picture in the Vindicator about our back pack program? The more publicity we get, the easier it will be to get new members and turtle derby sales.

Remember that all members are welcome to attend Monday's board meeting.

King Lion Nancy opened the meeting and Doug led us in God Bless America. Our invocation included thanking God for the successful operation of Ron Ameen and we continue to pray of a quick recovery.

TURTLE DERBY

Heather brought wine for the winning team but because we all did well she brought enough for all of us. Diane would have preferred beer. Bryan's team won because of all of his sales. Let’s give Heather a GOLD STAR as chairman of this year’s derby that brought in almost $32,000, a new club record.

REPORTS

Bill Cooper attended a cabinet meeting and reported that so far our district gained 144 new members, but lost 177. The Austintown club is now in our district and we have a new club named The Western Mahoning County Club.

CANFIELD FAIR

Getch named the 16 good Lions that will conduct the eye screening at the fair. We will be in the medical building near Rt. 46. The closest entrance and parking will be on 46 at gate 8a or 9.

BACKPACS

Nancy bought 71 backpacks and Howard Hanna bought 31. She brought them to the meeting and several members will take them to the schools. This was Nancy' idea and she did most of the work herself. She deserves a GOLD STAR for all of her efforts.

RAFFLE

Bryan won the big bucks. The rich get richer.

TAILTWISTER

Roger again came out of retirement and picked on everyone in sight. He even picked on Ron Ameen and his operation. He is a natural comedian. (Don't get mad Pete so are you.)

SPEAKER

Dorothy Barto is a volunteer for The Alzheimer Network. Everyone in the organization is volunteers. They provide service to patients and care givers. They present workshops, seminars, conferences and offer all types of information. They are funded by donations and fund raisers.

This is a wonderful organization that helps many people in many ways. If you know of any one with AD and know a care giver, I would highly recommend that you contact them at 4214 Market St. 330-788-9755 or on line at.alzohio.org.

If you come to a meeting at the Y next Thursday, you will be all alone.

King Lion Nancy welcomed everyone and it was nice to see the return of Justin, Jack and Lorie after a brief absence. Diane led us in song and the invocation included a prayer for the success of Ron Ameen’ surgery and a quick recovery.

BOARD REPORT

Getch gave the board report. Diane reported on our general fund for the first month of our fiscal year. We have cash assets of $5,931 with $3,158 reserved for the Rita Merz scholarship. After income and expenses we have a net of $54.00. Last year at his time our net was a loss of ($55.00). We have one member with delinquent dues.

Bryan gave the sight savings report. Our one month report shows a balance in the account of $31,865 after income and disbursements. Last year our balance was $27,207. At Nancy's request, Bryan submitted a budget for the year and after our customary annual donations we will have $8,000 left for other donations.

We approved a donation of $300 to the YMCA Strong Kids campaign.

Zone chairman Elmer Takash said there will be three zone meetings this year and we will not have to be a host until next year.

Jerry Bryan reported that we will receive $4,000 for sight savings from the estate of Ode Kraja and his wife.

RAFFLE

Michele missed out on the big money.

TAILTWISTER

Pete was picking on shirts today. He complimented several at his table for their shirts but said that Ed's looked like pajama tops. He said that Getch's was so bright that it could be used by traffic controllers at construction sites. He told one "Tom Doctor" joke that was a dud and I have to admit that I sent it to him. Good job Pete.

BOWLING

Diane said that bowling will begin in September and they welcome new bowlers. She said that you don't have to be a good bowler or a good drinker to join.

LIGHT BULBS

Pete said that First Energy is giving away free light bulbs. All you have to do is request them by going to their web site at www.ohioenergy.kit. Pete did that and received $50.00 worth of bulbs.

SPEAKER

Our speaker was Rob Kurtz, the Marketing Director for The Mahoning Valley parent’s magazine. It is free and 37,000 copies are distributed through the Valley on a monthly basis. It is owned by The Warren Tribune and totally funded by its ads. It included many articles of advice, especially as it pertains to kids and their parents and teachers. Some people who have moved away enjoyed it so much that they pay for it to be mailed at $18.00 per issue.

BOARD MEETING

There was a board meeting after the meeting. We approved $510 for back packs for kids that can't afford them. These funds were provided by our profit on the Chicken Wing function. We also approved $200 to put supplies in the back packs. Tom Zickefoose wants all clubs to provide a shoe box full of supplies for school kids and we will also participate in that with the $200. Nancy and the ladies will facilitate the program and hopefully the publicity for doing it.

GOLD STAR

Nancy has been King Lion for a short period of time and has done an excellent job. She has had many ideas that have been successful and does a lot of the work herself. She deserves a GOLD STAR.

King Lion Nancy welcomed everyone including our zone chairman Elmer Takash and our speaker Mona Behnke. She then led us in song. Our invocation included a prayer for all those that are in need of food and shelter and those that provide it.

INTRODUCTIONS

Nancy forgot the introductions and now we don't know each other. We did welcome back George Kolesar who couldn't find a golf game today.

CHICKEN WING DAY

Nancy reported that we received a total of $510. The raffle brought in $240 and the 10% from food and drinks totaled $270. (Jerry Bryan and Diane enhanced the drink sales.)

REPORTS

Getch says we need 4 more for the eye screening at the Canfield Fair. The board meeting will be this Monday and all members are welcome to attend.

RAFFLE

Bill Ruggles missed out, but shouldn't feel bad as he won all of the money at the Turtle Derby raffle.

TAILTWISTER

Pete went back to diaper duty. Roger took over and as usual brought down the house. He picked on Pete's bank, Diane's golf course, and George's golf game. He even picked on your poor old editor and said I thought I was being asked for sex but it was only for a babysitting job. Roger missed his calling. He could have been a standup comedian in Vegas. (Don't worry Pete, so could you.)

ZONE CHAIRMAN

Elmer said that on August 20th it will be Lion's night at the Scrappers game. Box seats and a picnic dinner will cost $16.00 and $4.00 of it will be donated to our Eye Care Foundation. You can just pay at the gate.

He also said that our District Governor's request will be to “just ask one person to join our club"

SPEAKER

Mona Behnke is the director of The Senior Center at 1110 Fifth Ave. They provide assistance at no cost for people over 60 years of age. They provide many services including but not limited to home energy assistance, utility help, applications for Medicare and Medicaid, prescriptions, Alzheimer’s support, care giver support, referrals for meal, etc. They also have daily programs at their location 5 days per week.

To learn more you can contact Debbie, their social worker at 330 744-5071.

Don got a nice hand for completing our web site, Youngstownlions.com." Let’s give Don a GOLD STAR for all of his work.

All of the funds are received and distributed in our district. We buy glasses and have paid for more than 100 surgeries and 6,500 eye screenings. King Lion Nancy welcomed a nice crowd and Brian led us in song. When our chaplain prayed for the "success" of our club he used the wrong word so we won't report on the invocation. (He must have had his mind on something else.)

INTRODUCTIONS

Ron Ameen took his 3 year old to the lily pond to see the fish and he asked Ron why all the fish were sleeping. Ron blames the dead fish on the EPA.

RAFFLE

Dennis won again and this time he was present so he gets the big bucks.

TAILTWISTER

Pete had some great ones today. He picked on Brian, Justin, and Diane and then told about a cowboy that wanted to be a lesbian. He said that today our chaplain got more laughs than he did.

QUAKER STEAK AND LUBE

Nancy reported that we will receive 10% of all of the sales between 5:00 and 9:00 PM including food, beer and liquor on Monday at Quaker Steak and Lube in Boardman. There will be a 50/ 50 raffle and we will bring our baskets that were left over from the turtle derby. She encouraged us and our families and friends to attend. (If Diane attends, beer sales will be up.)

PUBLICITY

Did you see Nancy's picture and article in the Vindicator? She is the leading sales person and gets the most listings at Howard Hanna Realtors. Now you know why she can sell us on all of her ideas.

She was also in The Austintown paper giving a pen to our speaker. Publicity is always good for our club.

INTRODUCTIONS

We welcomed back our long lost Lion Ron Smith. Keep coming Ron. It was also nice to see Jen Preisse. Jen now works in Warren and it is difficult for her to attend the meetings. It was so hot today that Ron Ameen took a cab from the parking lot.

WEB SITE

Don has been setting up our web site with a lot of help from Patti. The pending site is youngstownlions.com

RAFFLE

Heather lost the big bucks.

TAILTWISTER

Pete was at his usual best as he picked on Doug, Nancy, Roger and Ron. He and Doug have to figure out who would be the best fellowship chairman.

CHRISTMAS PARTY

Getch reported that this year's party will be on Wednesday December 4th.

QUACKER STATE & LUBE, BOARDMAN LOCATION

On Monday July 29th they will donate 10% of their income to our club. It would be nice if our members, family and friends would eat there on that day. Our board approved our participation.

SPEAKER

Our speaker was Leah Sabo who told us about the many YMCA sports leagues her daughter is in charge of all of their leagues that participate in baseball, T ball, basketball, and flag football. The athletes are from 6 years old through high school. They average over 100 kids in all sports.

They also have a league for kids from middle school to high school that have potential but did not make their school teams. Kids come from all over to play in this league and tournaments. All of the coaches, referees and umpires are volunteers. (I coached basketball in this league when my grandchildren were in grade school and know that it is very well run and successful.)

Their funding is through donations and fund raisers and she asked us to consider helping them financially.

REPORTS

Nancy got off to a great start and passed out a list of all committee chairmen and the duties of each one. Jodi Harmon was responsible for this great publicity and deserves a GOLD STAR.

BOARD REPORT

Getch gave the board report.

Diane gave the general fund report. At the end of our fiscal year we had gross income of $18,475 and a net of $251. Last year's net was $105. We gave $800 to the annual Rita Merz scholarship. The recipient is chosen by the Merz family. We had one member with delinquent dues.

We accepted the resignation of Lindsay Hughes and agreed to write off her dues.

Our speaker was Donna Detwiler from Yellow Brick Place. After Donna was diagnosed with cancer in 2003 she helped establish a Cancer Wellness Center for the Tri-County Area. They provide an environment for cancer patients, families and care givers. They are the "missing link" between treatment and recovery. They don't want anyone to face the journey alone. Their services are free and non-medical. If you want more information you can call Donna at 330-770-0808

LUNCHEON

Lunch was good and even tastes better with china plates and real utensils.

Our fifty second turtle derby is over and it was one of the best ever. All of our members deserve GOLD STARS for all of our efforts in raising about $31,000 to help those in need. First and foremost is Heather our chairman and Brian our co-chairman.

This includes all of the guys who unloaded, loaded and set up the track and equipment, those that started the turtles on time and kept the races rolling smoothly, Michele for housing the turtles and her husband Joe for starting the races with his trumpet.

Special big shiny GOLD STARS go to all of the ladies who worked so hard on all of the nice baskets at the races and the gong show. That includes Heather, Michele, Jodi, Pat, Diana, Josie, Lorie and Nancy. (I heard that Brian was also on the committee.) This took a lot of hard work and planning and at the last count they raised about $669.00. Congratulations ladies you did a great job.

PUBLICITY

Thanks to Nancy, we had three articles and a picture in the Vindicator. WFMJ covered the pre race and WKBN covered the races. This type of coverage helps us to raise money and obtain new members.

KING LION

It's a good thing that Bill didn't draw the tickets for the two $150 door prizes as he won them both.

The turtle derby is a good example that our club plays hard, and when the time comes we work hard.

SEE YA ALL IN TWO WEEKS AND BE CAREFUL WITH YOUR FIRE CRACKERS.

As his last meeting as King Lion, Bill welcomed everyone and Nancy led us in song. Our invocation included a prayer for world peace and the end of wars in those war torn countries.

INTRODUCTIONS

Bill forgot the introductions, but we did welcome back Myra Vitto after a brief absence.

KING LION

Bill deserves a big shiny GOLD STAR as he did a great job as president during this past year.

SCHOLARSHIP

We received $2,500 for the Callos scholarship from John's daughter, Evangeline Ramsey. (We should send her a thank you letter.)

RAFFLE

Ed Brant won the big bucks and can now take more vacations.

TAILTWISTER

Pete picked on Nancy and said her "daughter" attended the installation luncheon. It's a good thing her son didn't hear him. He had a good one about a sexy rabbit and one about Roger and Iris. As always a good job Pete!

TURTLE DERBY

Bryan Reed reported that including the gong show and basket raffle we will be close to $31,000 in gross income. Heather, Brian and all of our members deserve a GOLD STAR for a great effort. When Heather set a goal of $30,000 I thought it was overly optimistic, but it now looks like we will even exceed it.

DON'S SURVEY

The questions were:

Will the shale industry have any impact on shopping in stores, restaurants, sporting events, traffic in metro areas, traffic in rural areas, churches or your economic status.

The answers from were from 87.5% to 56.5% that there would be no impact on the above categories.

PUBLICITY

Thanks to Nancy, we had a turtle derby promotion on WFMJ's morning show on Thursday. We can always use this kind of publicity.

LIONS MAGAZINE

Our international president says that to keep clubs strong we should assess our needs, set goals, and evaluate our progress. (He left out the part about having fun like we do in our club,)

TURTLE DERBY

The races will begin at 6:30pm and we ask that you be there between 5:00pm and 5:30pm to set up and don't forget your Lion's shirts.
