Wetaskiwin Lions History!
Wetaskiwin Lions club was chartered on January 09, 1958. On that night the club was chartered with 23 members. Current membership stands at 43 members. The first president was Arnold Hoyne. 29, 2003.
We thank the Camrose Lions for being our charter sponsor.
The Club was and is still a very active and vibrant club in our District. The club in its early years became active in rodeos, street auctions, drive-in bingo, etc. One of its first major activities was to raise money for the Boy Scout building project which was completed in 1963. The Club is even more active in bingo today with the majority of its project funds coming from this source supporting 8 committees and over 50 standing activities. A list of these activities is shown on our web site activities page.
Collection of used eyeglasses began in 1963 and together with hearing aids has become one of major focuses.
Wetaskiwin got involved in club sponsoring of its own right in 1973-74 when it sponsored the Millet and District Lions which is still operating and prospering and it located just North of Wetaskiwin.
In 1992 Wetaskiwin became an early co-ed club when it invited the Lioness club to join forces.
A major accomplishment and source of Lion pride is the Wetaskiwin Lions RV Campground located just East of Wetaskiwin (taken over from the City of Wetaskiwin) which provides a family camping experience second to none.
- Other major projects over the past 45 years include:
- Construction of Norm Brown Track and Field Facility Tennis Courts
- Purchase a Handi-Van for the City of Wetaskiwin
The club continued to prosper over the years and is now a major contributor to the needs of others in our area where we as members continue to reach out in the great cause of Lionism.
