Westport Lions Club Announces 2024 Scholarship Deadline

WESTPORT – Students who reside in Westport and graduating from area schools may now apply for the annual Westport Lions Club scholarships.  Applications must be printed out, mailed and received and/or postmarked no later than April 26, 2024.

Last year, the Club was able to assist 5 Westport students by providing $20,000 in scholarships.

“The Westport Lions Club is dedicated to offering these scholarships to deserving students.  By assisting them in furthering their education, we hope to help them reach their goals and achieve their dreams,” reflected WLC President Claire M. Sullivan

Westport Lions Club Announces 2023 Scholarship Award Recipients

The Westport Lions Club is proud to announce this year’s scholarships have been awarded to the following Westport students for the 2023 Fall semester:

  • Ava Cambra, a top academic award student at Bishop Stang is awarded The Ernest & Prudence Chadwick Scholarship.  Ava will receive a scholarship of $2,500 per year for 4 years.  This fall, she will attend University of Vermont with the long-term goal of earning a Master’s Degree in Fine Arts. Ava will apply her talent and passion toward a career in the performing arts.
  • Harrison Costa is awarded The Harold Wood Scholarship. Harrison, a graduate of Bishop Stang High School will be attending University of Vermont this fall to pursue a career in Biomedical Engineering.  By combining the principles of engineering and design concepts, Harrison’s goal is to become a technology innovator to help solve medical issues and improve patient outcomes. Harrison will receive $1,500 a year for 4 years;
  • Noah Sowle will receive The Rush Workman/Frank and Brooke McGuigan Memorial Scholarship of $2,500.  Noah, a graduate of Westport High School, will be attending University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill majoring in Biology. Noah long term goal is to become a Pediatrician.

In ongoing celebration of the Club's 60th anniversary, two additional one-time scholarship awards of $2,000 each were added.  These are awarded to:

  • Nicholas DosVais, a graduate from Westport High School, will be attending Bryant University majoring in Finance.
  • Camryn Rezendes, a Westport High School graduate. Camryn will attend UMASS-Dartmouth with the goal of becoming a labor and delivery nurse.

The Westport Lions Club awards annual scholarships to graduating high school seniors who are residents of Westport.  Qualified applicants are required to meet and maintain defined criteria and plan to attend an accredited university, college, or trade school. All scholarships are funded by private donations given by families and friends in memory of club members who were strong advocates of higher education. Applicants are selected based on financial need, high school academics, leadership abilities, and demonstrated values that reflect Lions Club values.

The scholarship committee was impressed by the quality and caliber of students from our community. Scholarships will be presented at the upcoming Lions Club Dinner.  In the meantime, the Westport Lions Club wishes to extend best wishes to all applicants and Class of 2023 Westport graduates.


Westport Lions Club 2022 Scholarship Award Recipients

The Westport Lions Club is proud to announce this year’s 2022 scholarships recipients:

  • Laura J Martel, a top student at Westport High School is awarded The Ernest & Prudence Chadwick Scholarship.  Laura will receive a scholarship of $2,000 per year for 4 years.  This fall, she will attend Husson University with the long-term goal of earning a Master’s Degree in Occupational Therapy. As an occupational therapist, she plans to focus her skills assisting injured veterans.
  • Nathaniel R. Gifford is awarded The Harold Wood Scholarship. Nathaniel, a graduate of Westport High School, will be attending Massachusetts Maritime Academy this fall majoring in Marine Transportation.  He will receive $1,000 a year for 4 years;
  • Alexzander E. Santos will receive The Rush Workman/Frank and Brooke McGuigan Memorial Scholarship of $2,500.  Alexzander, a graduate of Westport High School, will be attending Roger Williams University majoring in Cybersecurity.

In celebration of the Club's 60th anniversary, two additional one-time scholarship awards of $1,000 were added.  These are awarded to:

  • Ellie J. Sullivan, a graduate from Bishop Stang High School, will be attending Boston University majoring in Public Health Sciences.
  • Gwenyth R. Pichette, a Westport High School graduate who will attend the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth this fall as an English major.

 


 

2021 Scholarship Award Recipients

  • David R. Abgrab, a top academic award student at Bishop Connolly is awarded The Ernest & Prudence Chadwick Scholarship.  David is currently attending the University of Massachusetts-Amherst with the long-term goal of earning a master’s degree in chemical engineering for a career in pharmaceuticals.

  • Victoria I. Raposo was awarded The Harold Wood Scholarship. Victoria, a graduate of Bishop Stang High School is attending Bridgewater State University majoring in elementary education with a concentration in special education.

  • Julia G. Hurley received The Rush Workman/Frank and Brooke McGuigan Memorial Scholarship.  Julia, a graduate of Westport High School, is attending the American International College majoring in Biochemistry. Julia is seeking a career in genetic research.


2020 Scholarship Award Recipients

  • Nicole d’Almeida, Bishop Stang’s Class of 2020 Salutatorian is currently a pre-Med student at Providence College.

  • Rachel Collins, is a student at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst majoring in Biology.

  • Adam Charest, Valedictorian of the Class of 2020 for Westport Junior/Senior High School is currently at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst majoring in Microbiology.
