HAITI EARTHQUAKE COLLECTION

Urmston Lions spent two hours on Eden Square in Urmston collecting for the earthquake Relief in Haiti. People gave very generously and the Lions raised £465 in just two hours.

” Lions are committed to bringing aid to those impacted by the earthquake in Haiti. Through support from people in our community, our club and LCIF will be able to help so many more,” said the President of Urmston Lions Club.

Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) has awarded a US$50,000 Major Catastrophe Grant to immediately provide help to the victims of the devastating earthquake in Haiti. LCIF is in contact with Lions in the immediate area, neighbouring Latin American countries and area Lions leadership, to assess the situation and determine immediate needs and how Lions and LCIF can best assist.

As with past disasters, Lions clubs members worldwide are supporting LCIF relief efforts. Within 24 hours, Lions around the world have pledged nearly US$250,000 to help. Immediate relief efforts will centre on providing water, food, medicine and other essential needs.

Lions members in the area are mobilizing. Lions within the Dominican Republic are collecting goods as well as using LCIF funding to purchase relief supplies, which they will drive across the border to disperse. Lions from Sweden will be sending tents to the Dominican Republic for the Lions to also transport to the area. These large tents will help house victims and relief workers.

Lions from Canada were in the area helping to establish a clean water system for the Mission of Hope orphanage when the earthquake hit. They are now assisting in providing immediate medical care. Lions have established a command post and are administering medical assistance 24 hours a day. They have worked out a shift system. In the first three hours of operation they tended to 100 sick and injured.

MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE

Message in a Bottle is a scheme where anyone can fill in their medical and contact details on a form and place the form in their fridge. They then stick a label on the outside of the fridge door, where the para-medics can see it. If there is a need to call the ambulance service the Message that has been placed in the Bottle could save your life. At the very least if you are taken into hospital it contains details of your next of kin who can be told where you are. Simple but it has saved lives

Message in a Bottle is not solely a Lions initiative, however it is an initiative that very many Lions Clubs across the country have taken to and recognise as a means of fulfilling our motto “We Serve”, often funding the scheme from their own charity accounts.

This scheme is free to the user. Whilst it is focused on the more vulnerable people in our community, anyone can fall downstairs, so this scheme can benefit anyone, including you. As a minimum it will save the Emergency Services valuable time identifying you and your emergency contacts. By telling whether you have special medication or allergies or not, it is a potential lifesaver and provides peace of mind to users and their friends and families.

PLAYTIME IN THE PARK

On a Saturday afternoon, the Sun shone and Golden Hill Park was invaded by Mums, Dads, Grans, Granddads and especially Children. Urmston Lions organised their annual Free Fun Day and invited the people of Urmston to join them in playing all the old games.

Weird inventions like, Running Backwards Races, Crawling races were amongst the games invented and organised. The Sack Race was particularly popular; no limbs were broken or bent.

The Lion President said, “They were delighted with the turnout of over 250 people of all ages. It proves that children do not need anything too clever. Give them the chance of playing and they will enjoy themselves”.

Kryinitchka Komes by Koach to Wales

What started off as a thought in Lion George Hughes mind, finally came to fruition this week, when not one, but two overseas groups performed at the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod, thanks to the generosity of Lions throughout Wales and England.

Lions George said “I had hoped to persuade my fellow Lions to give about £1,000 to our appeal, but they have surprised, no amazed me by giving enough to let these groups have £1,500 towards their visa costs. I am also delighted to announce that we will be able to give the group a further £250 towards their vast fuel bills. Their joy in being here is wonderful and they will always be grateful to the Lions of 105BS.”
