October 2018 - Visit to EPA Childrens' Foundation

On October 11th, Lions Antonis Dimitriadis, George Tzimas and Kostas Kazanis visited the EPA childrens’ foundation at Kaminia, Piraeus and delivered bags with clothes, shoes, books and toys plus three vaccines for meningitis “Bexero”.The vaccines value was 312 euro.

There was a meeting with the current president of the foundation, an acting public prosecutor, since the foundation is under the control of Ministry of Justice, who explained to us the challenges that they face in their daily operations. The good news were that they had recent donations from various donors, so the facilities were much better (freshly painted, with new restaurant place and improved surrounding area) in comparison to our previous visit.

We will visit them again during the next semester to give them some more vaccines and other useful goods.

June 2018 - Visit and Donation to Pikpa Pentelis

May 2017 - Donation to "Kalos Poimenas" children foundation

On Tuesday, May 17th, 2017, members from the Athens Universe Lions Club visited the children foundation “Kalos Poimenas” at Kaminia, Piraeus. This foundation belongs to the Ministry of Justice and accommodates 56 kids (some of them at volunteer families) that are coming from families with problematic/criminal behavior, unable to grow them up properly. Aged from 4-18 years old, they follow lessons internally and at nearby schools. We got information regarding their activity and needs, visited the facilities, spoke to some of the children and delivered 75 kgs of meat, as per their request. We thank Megoulis butcher shop at Melissia, for the special prices and the donation of some chickens.

March 2017 - Sponsoring concert "Children help Children"

On Friday 10th and Saturday 11th of March Lions Universe participated as sponsor to the philanthropic concert "Children help children" of the association of parents of DSA (German School of Athens) with the school orchestra and choir and the kind participation of the internationally recognized soprano Mrs Alexandra Gravas. With the funds raised, the parents association will contribute to institutes supporting children. For Lions Athens Universe it was an opportunity for publicity, because the participation was advertised through the newsletter that reaches all the community, also through Facebook and moreover we had a stand with a new banner and brochures from the District to communicate the Lions activities to an audience where we usually attract our potential members.

March 2017 - Visit and Donation to PIKPA Pentelis

On Monday 6th of March, members of Lions Club Universe delivered to orphans institution PIKPA Pentelis useful materials according to their needs. The staff informed us that they have recently opened three new rooms in order to accommodate 15 more babies. Actually in front of us they just “received” a newborn baby from University hospital of Patras! We delivered 3 sets of wireless telephones devices, fruit mixers and water boilers plus 15 boxes of baby pants.

December 2016 - Visit at Lavrio Refugee Camp

On Dec 8th, L A. Dimitriadis and L K. Kazanis went to the refugees camp at Lavrio to deliver the school stuff that they had requested and Lions A. Liakopoulos and G. Tzimas had purchased during the previous week. We also delivered about 10 bags of used clothes and shoes.

Mrs. Vrioni informed us that the camp at the moment accommodates about 500 people, from which 160 are kids-these numbers change on daily basis. They were in the past under the Ministry of Labor but recently they have been moved under the Ministry of Immigration, which for them is not a good development. They remain unpaid since a couple of months.

Recently the NGO “Doctors of the World” have established a branch there, so they have some more support at the camp. Their kids have been vaccinated and they are going to the school at normal hours because their role is to adapt the refuges to the local society, not to keep them on short time until they leave.

Some good news is that the Luxembourg Red Cross has expressed its interest to finance the rebuilding of the buildings there, which are 70 years old with very primitive facilities.

April 2016 - Annual Visit at  Lavrio Refugee Camp

After collecting all donations (kids clothes, kids accessories, toys and  table games, small bottled olive oil) of our members and friends of our club we found ourselves yesterday morning in Maroussi to start the tour.

Unfortunately we missed to call our other members to join due to very intensive days this week. We hope this was ok and apologies for that. We guess that there will be another chance soon again. Attached some pics of the action for internal use.

In Halandri we were given three big boxes by Fa Epko with a great amount of small portioned hygiene goods (like shampoos, creams, washing gels etc especially for kids  from Fa Buebchen) for a very attractive price. Also, they gave us their van for the delivery free of charge( gas, toll road included), which was a great help since both our cars were filled up to the limit.

Our tour started with our 1st stop at Ikeas to buy the cushions ( 20pcs 50x60cm, 20pcs small), 2nd stop at Lidl’s for oil and 3rd  at Jumbos for buying 9pcs of foot-, basket- and waterballs which were deeply needed  for daily activities for the kids.

All donated goods were handed over to the camp and Red Cross representative Mrs Katerina V (unfortunately the director was in downtown Athens at the Ministry) and unloaded on the Afghan wing of the camp. It was a great experience to talk and hear about the aspects from the camps institution. We were informed that our work and donation are very welcome, since the camp doesn’t get any constant support, even from the state, for the many needs they have and that they are very happy to know our clubs support on their side for so many years. They expressed many thanks’ to all our members  as well as former ones and greetings to Frank Giljohann, who was the familiar face to them for the years before. We expressed our thoughts that they are doing an very important job and hope to give theme our best support as possible.

It was a very interesting, informative and moving day. We think and hope our donation was the right thing to do and thank you all for your support.

March 2016 - Refugee Donation to support District Initiative

We bought the goods for refugees delivered them to the District in the afternoon, with the help (.. to carry them!) of our friends from Continental Club (Miki Kontopoulos and their new President Nabil Hage.

February 2016 - Visit & Donation to Pikpa Pentelis

In the morning of Friday Feb 5th, 3 members of Lions Athens Universe Club visited PIKPA Pentelis in order to get news about the foundation and to hand over our annual donation in term of required goods like diapers, medicines, household and office supplies to support their valuable work.

Ms Kournaki, the social worker of the foundation gave us a nice overview on the

activities of PIKPA Pentelis. In the well-maintained buildings from 1937, 60 employees take care of about 40 boys and girls in the age between 0 and 6 years. The foster children stay there for about 2 years until they are either adopted, move on to other institutions or at best can go back to their own families.

Although well supported by the Greek Ministry of Work, PIKPA Pentelis appreciates support and donations to guarantee best possible conditions for their little ones.

Ms Kournaki informs us about the foundation
