THE CLUB HOSTED THE CONDUCT OF SYMPOSIUM ON ILLEGAL DRUGS AND SUBSTANCE ABUSE

          In cooperation with the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA)-Region VIII, Dangeroues Drugs Board (DDB) and Parole and Probation Administration-DOJ, Region VIII,  Tacloban City Lions Club hosted the Symposium on Illegal Drugs and Substance Abuse at its Clubhouse on January 31, 2011. Lion members, Volunteer Probation Aides (VPAs), 4th year Bachelor of Science in Criminology students and Probation and Parole Officers attended the said symposium.

          Speakers include Ms. Gretchen Buhay, of PDEA-8, who talked about the Illegal Drugs and Drug Abuse Situation in Region VIII and Dr. Teresita Cajano, of Treatment and Rehabilitation Center (TRC), Bgy. Highway, Dulag, Leyte, who talked about the Drug Abuse Treatment and Rehabilitation.

          Lion President Arturo Gabrieles thanked everybody who attended the said symposium. Lion members who attended include, Tom Hamilton, Atty. Vic Reyes, Benny Yao, Wee Sit Bia Ong, and Virgilio Cayanong. The club allowed the free use of its Clubhouse and sponsored the snacks of the guests and participants. Atong Espiritu served as the Master of Ceremonies. Lion Tom Hamilton also hared his testimony about his son who experienced substance abuse.

          PDEA-8 Regional Director Julius R. Navales, DDB Representative CPPO Ma. Beverly V. Duque - Ampo, and PPA-DOJ-8 Assistant Director Josefina N. Singco also graced the said memorable event.

TACLOBAN CITY LIONS CLUB HOSTED THE SECOND CABINET MEETING AND DISTRICT CONVENTION IN TACLOBAN

     The International Association of Lions Clubs District 301-B2, which is comprised of Lions Clubs in Cebu, Bohol, Leyte, Samar and Biliran provinces, held its 2nd Cabinet Meeting and District Convention last December 4, 2010 at the Tacloban City Lions' Clubhouse, Family Park Compound, Magsaysay Boulevard, Tacloban City. 

    Governor Carlos Jericho L. Petilla, Province of Leyte was the Guest of Honor during the morning activity while City Councilor Cristina Gonzales - Romualdez, City of Tacloban, was the Guest during the Fellowship Night.

Medical Mission in Mayorga

      In order to extend its programs and services to far flung areas, the Tacloban City Lions Club held a medical mission last October 17, 2010 in Barangay San Andres Bonifacio, Mayorga, Leyte, a good 43 kilometers away from the city. The activity was in coordination with the An Waray Party List thru Lion Congressman Neil Benedict Montejo, and Mr. Jude Acidre, Executive Director, which provided the needed medicines.

     The consultation and check up were undertaken by physician members of the club as well as the doctors and nurses of Remedios Trinidad Romualdez - Medical Foundation, Inc., Tacloban City thru its Dean of the College of Medicine, Lion Dr. Jesus Reyes. The barangay health workers and the barangay peace keeping force provided the necessary assistance and security of the activity. Around 289 people of various ages and ailments were served and benefited by the project.

     The medical mission was made possible thru the initiative and invitation of School Principal Heidi Marie Caminong and Barangay Chairman Reynaldo Tabuyan of Barangay Andres Bonifacio, Mayorga, Leyte.

   Club President Art Gabrieles expressed his wholehearted appreciation and gratitude for the successful condocut of the out of town endeavor. He made special mention the strong support of the club members who selflessly exerted time and effort in the activity.

      For his part, Leyte - Samar Area Deputy Governor Lion Roberto Montejo, said that "truly, there is no substitute for a well coordinated action and support of everyone in the success of any undertaking".

TACLOBAN CITY LIONS CLUB LAUDS 2010 ALAY LAKAD SUCCESS

     The Tacloban City Lions Club which hosted this year's Alay Lakad, lauds the successful holding of the event last September 26, 2010. In coordination with the City Government of Tacloban, the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO), and Philhealth - Tacloban, the activity was well attended by health unthusiasts and civic conscious individuals and groups belonging to different sectors of society. The number of participants was estimated to be around six thousand warm bodies of varied ages. This was led by no less than the City Mayor of Tacloban, Alfred S. Romualdez, Lions Club President Arturo O. Gabrieles, CSWDO Head Liliosa Baltazar and PHILHEALTH Regional Vice President  Walter R. Bacareza.

     In his welcome address, Lion President Arturo Gabrieles, who is also the Regional Director of Parole and Probation Administration - Department of Justice, Regional Office No. VIII, disclosed the multifarious activities and achievements already undertaken and accomplished by the host club, but that "its service would continue as long as there are still people in need of assistance" in conformity with its club motto, which is "We Serve". 

     Those who lent support as well were Regional Directors and representatives of National Government Agencies, heads of civic clubs, business and professional groups, military organizations, secondary and college students and barangay populace. The celeberation culminated with a raffle of door prizes donated by civic -spirited individuals and establishments in the city.

     Alay Lakad is an annual event created and organized by virtue of Presidential Proclamation in order to raise funds for various development projects for the out of school youths.

     This is the 3rd time that the Tacloban City Lions Club hosted this event.
