Meetings

HISTORY OF LIONS CLUB OF SUBANG JAYA In February 1982, members of the Lions Club of Petaling Jaya, under the presidency of Lion K. K. Loke, initiated a meeting of some members of the Subang Jaya community with the intention of forming a Lions Club. Those present were briefed on certain aspects of Lionism by PDG (current PID) Lion Datuk Douglas K. K. Lee and PDG Lion Datuk Dr. Pius Martin (deceased). Most of those who attended the meeting responded positively and a pro-term committee was set-up under the Chairmanship of Dr. Wong Sai Hou. Lions Club of Petaling Jaya assigned Lions K. K. Loke, T.T. Tan and Mike Azavedo to guide the newly born. The first meeting of the club was held in the following month and a Board of Directors was elected to administer the club. A Ladies Night was held at the Subang View Hotel in April 1982 and our guest speaker was PDG (current PID) Lion Datuk Douglas K. K. Lee. Many potential members were inspired by his talk on Lionism and immediately signed up the application forms to be Charter members. In June 1982, the Club organized a Poster Drawing competition for pupils of the Subang Jaya Primary School in conjunction with its Environmental Services Project. The Keep Subang Jaya Clean Campaign was highlighted with the distribution of 2,000 pieces of rubbish disposal bags to the residents and eight rubbish bins and stands to the schools and the parkland. The success of its first community project attracted many service minded people who later enrolled into the club. Our application for the Charter from Lions Club International was approved on 21st August 1982 and on the same day, amidst some pompous ceremony; thirty members of the club received their charter pins from the District Governor District 308 Lion Choong Chin Liang. Lion Mohammed Mohd. Amin was officially installed the Charter President. Members of the community wished us well by attending the dinner, which was held at Subang View Hotel (Subang Sheraton), Subang Jaya. Our guest of honour was the Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, Malaysia Y.B. Dato' Lew Sip Hon. In April 1983 at the District 308 Lions Convention held in Ipoh Town Hall, the club received the District Merit Award from District Governor Lion Choong Chin Liang. This recognition, a rare achievement for a seven-month old club, provided the impetus for the morale of the members and spurred them on to greater heights in Lionism. Our application for Registration under the Registrar of Societies was approved on 18 November 1986.
