Lions Club of St Austell 55th anniversary

On Saturday 23rd March, The Lions Club of St Austell celebrated the 55th anniversary of the granting of its Charter. Though the previous 54 celebrations took the form of an evening Dinner, this anniversary was marked by a luncheon in the splendid setting of the Oak Dining Room in Trenython Manor. The St Austell Lions and partners were joined by representatives of the Soroptimists, other Cornwall Lions Clubs and Friends.

District Governor James Mathers and Lions President David Honey MBE were recipients of Mervyn Jones Fellowships

THE LIONS CLUB OF ST AUSTELL HELPS TRIO OF TALENTED YOUNGSTERS ACHIEVE THEIR DREAMS IN MEMORY OF FOUNDING MEMBER

The Lions Club of St Austell has partnered with Young & Talented Cornwall, The Lord Lieutenant’s Fund to help gifted youngsters from the area achieve their dreams. The community organisation has donated £4000 to the 2023 programme which supports the next generation of superstars who otherwise lack the means to achieve their potential in memory of Michael Collins.

Michael was a founder member and four times President of the Lions Club in St Austell and sadly passed away in December last year having dedicated 54 years of loyal service to Lions Clubs International and the local community.

We will be holding our next collection for Ukraine on Saturday 25th November between 10.00am and 11am at the Car Park of St Mary's Church, St Blazey Gate. Items particularly requested include warm children's clothing, nappies, ladies' sanitary products, sleeping bags, small tents, and paracetamol. We look forward to seeing you there!

Following our collection for Ukraine on Saturday 28th October St Austell Lions Barbara and Roger on the left, delivering part of last Saturday's collection for Ukraine to Lion Emma of Callington Lions Club, for onward transportation.

Shortly after the invasion of Ukraine, a group was set up called CORNWALL AND DEVON SENDING LOVE TO UKRAINE.
It was set up by Callington Taxi Driver, Darren Tait, and very soon an ever growing group of volunteers got together to collect, pack and drive aid to the Poland/Ukraine Border on a monthly basis.

19 months on, the group have delivered 147 vans of medical and humanitarian aid and 5 Ambulances, over 16 trips, averaging every 5 weeks including the Christmas period. They also deliver items for a thousand orphans looked after by Warsaw Lions Clubs. On trip 2, Lions Andy and Emma Burnard from Callington Lions, joined the group and are now collecting with the team from 25 district lions clubs from Penzance to North of Bristol ,as well as helping at the collection centre at the Emporium,Tavistock Rd, Callington, and driving the aid to its destination. Each trip takes 5 days, over 6 countries, 2500 miles and the group is all self funding.

After the presentation they were given a van load of supplies to take on their next trip on 25th October, including sanitary items, nappies, sleeping bags and much more.

This week we are collecting babies' and toddlers' clothing, nappies, wet wipes, ladies' sanitary products, camping equipment and clean sleeping bags (following the dam burst), walking aids, and paracetamol. We hope to see you there.

HELP FOR UKRAINE

St Austell Lions in conjunction with other Lions Clubs in Cornwall and Devon have been collecting essential items for the relief of war-torn Ukrainians remaining in their own country.  Items such as nappies, walking aids, sanitary products and medicines such as paracetamol are then transported using a fleet of vans to Ukraine via Warsaw.

In the photograph Lion James Mathers (centre right) and his wife Lion Gail are shown handing over items generously donated by the residents of St Austell in what is hoped to me the first of many such shipments.

Lions Club of St Austell joins forces with Young & Talented Cornwall

The Lions Club of St Austell is collaborating with Young & Talented Cornwall, The Lord Lieutenant’s Fund with a specific award for young talent from the wider St Austell area.

This award will be in memory of Michael Collins; a founder member of the Lions Club in St Austell who sadly passed away in December last year. ‘Mike’ had been President four times and was an active member who gave 54 years of loyal service to Lions Clubs International and our community. The Membership has chosen to remember Mike by donating a monetary award to a talented young person seeking to achieve their ambitions – Young & Talented Cornwall provides crucial support to help fulfil these dreams.

Young & Talented Cornwall, formerly known as the Lord Lieutenant’s Fund, was created in 2005 and is today headed by the present Lord Lieutenant, Colonel Edward Bolitho OBE. It strives to help those young Cornish individuals, between the ages of 14 and 23, who have demonstrated an outstanding talent in a particular field – be it sport, dance, music, creative writing or musical theatre – but are struggling to achieve their ambition or progress in their chosen career because of hardship or disability.

St Austell Lions and Young & Talented Cornwall believe that no budding superstar should have their dreams dashed due to a lack of financial support or expert advice and urge any potential recipients to apply now using the link below:

https://youngandtalentedcornwall.org/how-to-apply/

Applications will close on 31 July 2023.

MAJOR EARTHQUAKE

Our Lions Clubs in Turkey have today received an initial $200,000 Emergency Grant from LIONS CLUBS INTERNATIONAL FOUNDATION.

All clubs , including ours, contribute to this fund.

We regret to inform you that due to the weather, expected road conditions and the risk to the public and the Lions crew, the Christmas Sleigh to Duporth and Porthpean will again be cancelled tomorrow evening.

Unfortunately the Xmas Sleigh on Friday to Parkway and Bird Sanctuary will also need to be cancelled for the same reasons as before. We pray for better weather next week.

Visit to Cornwall Energy Recovery Centre at St. Dennis,

We were impressed by the technology and sheer size of the facility. It can treat up to 240,000 tonnes of waste each year, using the waste as a fuel to generate electricity, exporting 16.6 megawatts to the National Grid - enough to power the equivalent of 21,000 homes. Many thanks to Sarah Cotton and Abigail Bailey, both Education and Community Officers, for their interesting and informative presentation and tour of the facility.

Barbara Trenerry (pictured left) President of St Austell Lions Club was delighted to welcome District Governor, Lesley Chudley, to their meeting on Wednesday 28th September where they exchanged banners.  The District Governor who leads almost 60 Lions Clubs across the South West said, 'It has been a tremendous pleasure to visit St. Austell Lions and see all the things they are involved with'.

Also at the same meeting, Lion President Barbara Trenerry congratulated Lion David Honey who had stepped up to become Vice President of St Austell Lions Club.  Lion David had previously been their President throughout lockdown due to Covid in 2020-21 when meeting in person was not possible.  Lion David said, “I became the Club’s first virtual President but now I will have the opportunity to do it for real.”

Members of St Austell Lions play an important role in the local community, whether it be providing support for those in need, protecting the environment with beach cleans and litter picks, guiding Santa around the streets of St Austell and surrounding districts at Christmas, and raising money to support all these projects.  Lion President Barbara said, “As Lions we take great pride in serving our local community and we invite others who also care to join our ranks.”

Lions Club of St. Austell President, Barbara Trenerry, presented a Lion's Club Certificate of Appreciation to Miss Caroline Woodward in recognition of her work in our community. Caroline has worked very hard, being one of the main co-ordinators in St Austell , reaching out to the local community and far beyond, collecting items for Ukraine and our own homeless and elderly. She has been instrumental in sending out appeals for soft toys, gifts, clothes, bedding, medical supplies, toiletries, children's treats, nappies, water, bags and suitcases with pens, paper and pencils as well as organising Bandera energy bars for the frontline soldiers, collecting ingredients, and arranging transport from collection points to Ukraine. Well done Caroline

St. Austell Lions clearing the way

The Club were out in force once again, this time clearing an essential pathway forming part of the Pentewan trail and a section of the National Cycle Route.  Equipped with strimmers, loppers and blowers the team cleared back the vegetation that had built up over recent months.

Lion Geoff Oswald (centre in photo) said “This is an exercise that we have undertaken for more than 20 years much to the delight of pedestrians and cyclists.  There is no pavement on this section the trail and we are proud to help our community to navigate this path in safety.”  Their good work can be seen on the right.

Lions Clubs of the South West District celebrate their annual handover

There are currently 58 Lions Clubs with in excess of 1,000 members throughout the District which stretches from Penzance to Weymouth and as far north of Portishead just short of Bristol. The  new Vice Governor is to be James Mathers of our own club (second from left in photo) and only the second member from our club to hold that office. Vice District Governor, James Mathers, said “Looking after our local communities is becoming increasingly important especially in these difficult economic conditions and we are proud to serve because we care.”

James, who recently completed his term as the President of his club is encouraging new members to join the organisation which has been in existence for over 100 years and leads the world in many humanitarian projects including giving support to the refugees who have fled Ukraine.

Our President, James Mathers, said “Whilst much of our work is concentrated in helping those in need locally, we are part of an organisation that has humanitarian objectives across the globe.”

James who is also Vice District Governor elect for the South West region added “Through our network of local Lions Clubs in those countries receiving refugees we can transfer funds to the front line to provide accommodation, food and essentials to those who have fled Ukraine with little more than what they stood up in and since we have no administration charges every penny counts.”

THE  LIONS CLUB OF ST AUSTELL SANTA SLEIGH DECEMBER 2021

As a result of your help and support, we are happy to report that the collections from the Xmas Sleigh totalled almost £4000. Thank you to everyone who helped in any way, often in wet weather. The money will be spent on our local charities and other deserving causes. We cannot manage to do this annual and often greatly anticipated event without help, as we have only 19 members who are increasingly elderly. We need a lot more helpers to enable us to continue. If anyone would like to volunteer, we will start compiling a list. Please contact us on this page or on FB messenger.

Our major expense is the maintenance of the vehicle which comes to about £1200 each year. We are looking for sponsorship to help with this. If anyone can help or suggest a possible donor it would be appreciated. We would ensure maximum publicity.

St. Austell Lions Club doing their bit to clean up our countryside

The motto of Lions organisations is “We Serve” so in in order to provide a community service, Saturday 12th June saw members of the Lions Club of St. Austell carrying out a litter pick along the A390 from St. Mary’s Church, Biscovey, to the Britannia Inn. Armed with their trusty litter pickers and black sacks, members of the club worked their way down the pavement side of the very busy road accumulating sacks full of rubbish (which were duly deposited in the town’s Recycling Centre!).

In the Lions’ calendar, Saturday 12th June is designated as ‘Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) Day’ so by choosing that day, the St. Austell Lions were not only able to do something for the community but also recognise LCIF Day. The purpose of the LCIF is to support the efforts of Lions clubs in serving communities locally and globally through humanitarian service projects and grants.

If you would like to help your community by becoming a Lion, please contact Lion President David Honey on 07802 611841

ONLINE CHARITY AUCTION MARCH/APRIL 2021

ST AUSTELL

This event managed to raise money for Food Larders in St Austell.  With the present Covid scenario and subsequent economic hardship for families, these local organisations are operated by volunteers on a shoe-string, and rely on local traders who generously supply them with unwanted items. Our contribution, to be announced shortly,  should benefit families who are finding it difficult at this time.

Two years ago we provided every primary school in our area with a book by Ellie Jackson, environmental scientist and author, illustrating the dangers of ocean plastic. This month we are supplying all 16 schools with the latest book ( pictured here) about Climate Change. Their website is below.

Every Christmas our Lions Club supply and deliver  Xmas presents to the former residents of Tregarne Hostel, originally sponsored by us some 48 years ago, who are now lliving in the community. CHANGE IN THE PRIDE AT ST. AUSTELL LIONS CLUB

St. Austell Lions Club recently welcomed their new president during the last meeting, held virtually on Zoom!

Lion David Honey MBE has taken over the presidency for this coming Lions year and will carry on the good work carried out by the previous club president Lion Tony Pickup. Lion President David said “It is an honour to take over the presidency of the Club, albeit in these unusual times.” He then went on to say that having enjoyed the camaraderie experienced through a career in Education and service in the Special Constabulary, he was delighted to find such camaraderie in the Lions and that he was looking forward to resuming with colleagues the Club’s normal service activities and social events when circumstances allow.

Immediate Past President Lion Tony Pickup said "This has been an interesting year for the Lions Club of St Austell.  Sadly, the best part of four months has been lost due to the coronavirus outbreak, and because of the advancing years of the majority of our members, and their need to shield, we have not been able to help in the community as much as we would have liked.  Fortunately, our two main fund-raising events, Duck Racing and Santa’s Sleigh, were held before the virus took over, enabling us to top up our reserves prior to the lockdown. It is always sad to have to let go of the reins, but in handing over the Presidency to Lion David Honey I do so knowing it will be in good hands, and I wish him and the Club best wishes for a very successful year".

During the past 12 months the club has been actively raising funds in the following ways:

Our popular Duck races were held in the summer and required a real team effort to ensure a successful outcome. As always, fellow Lions and ladies turned out with their usual enthusiasm to sell tickets and to ensure that it was a safe and successful fundraising event.  Unfortunately, the number of races was down on previous years due to some rather inclement weather. The traditional outing with the Santa Sleigh took place in December, and delivered a generous dose of Christmas Cheer to children of all ages.

In addition to our usual activities, in October an Indoor Horse Racing event was held at Mount Charles Social Club which was well attended. A great idea enjoyed by all.

Successful Christmas Store collections at TESCO and ASDA took place again this year.  Unfortunately, the annual Easter Egg Raffle was affected by the Coronavirus lockdown.

Throughout the year work has been undertaken in the community supplying food, white goods and beds for deserving families. In September a family was funded to attend the Newquay Lions Caravan Holiday at Hendra Newquay.

Approximately 2000 pairs of spectacles have been collected and forwarded on to Eye Programmes in other parts of the world.

Members have undertaken painting and planting in Thorn Park and Tregrehan Park, which has brought in donations to the club. In addition did our usual trail cleaning Pentewan valley leisure path.

We have been also able to help a number of individuals and families, mainly through the St. Austell Children's Centre.  The Centre is a 'last stop' before Social Services become involved and it is a help to us to know that the families' circumstances have been determined before any request for assistance is made. It is good that we have also been able to help local organisations such as the Sticker Memory Cafe.

On a global scale the Lions Club of St. Austell provides donations to the Lions Clubs International Foundation who provides grants for humanitarian projects and other support such as disaster relief.

The Lions Club of St. Austell are always looking for more volunteers to help serve in their community, if it’s something you think you’d like to get involved with you can find details on our club website at: www.staustelllions.co.uk, the club’s Facebook page, or telephone 0845 8339814 (all calls at local rates) for more information.

CLUB IN ACTION FOR NEEDY FAMILY

We received a message from a Family Support worker that a family of 4 with two young children aged 2 and 4 yrs  had been rehoused suddenly in our area and were starting from scratch. They were in need of carpets and storage. Knowing all the usual sources were closed we sought help from our  members, who responded with 3 chests of drawers,  two carpets, carpet grips and a rug. LIONS CLUB of ST. AUSTELL welcome leading wildlife photographer Rowenna Castillo

The Club welcomed well known local wildlife photographer Rowenna Castillo-Nicholls, who gave a most interesting and informative illustrated talk on her top 20 rarity sightings of the decade.

Lions Club members were amazed at the high quality of her photographs, and at the patience needed to obtain them!  Cornwall is one of the best locations for wildlife photography in the UK, and more of Rowenna's work may be seen at www.ilovecornwall8.com

CLUB VISIT TO BODMIN RECYCLING CENTRE

A very interesting visit to learn what happens to all our recycling materials. After an excellent presentation of the processes involved, we saw at first hand how it is sorted and handled. It was interesting and reassuring to find that none of our waste from Cornwall is shipped abroad and we no  longer have any landfill sites in the county. The amounts of plastic were staggering.

A future visit to the Cornwall Energy and Recovery Centre at St. Dennis has been planned in May.

BEACH CLEANS are also part of our service to the community. In February, we signed up for two, both at Par Beach, although the weather not surprisingly caused cancellation of one of them.                                  More to do when the weather improves!!

At their last meeting the Lions Club of St. Austell the guest speaker was Helen Pierce, Dispensing Optician with Boots, St. Austell, who gave an interesting and informative talk on the importance of early diagnosis of sight problems in children. Helen said: 'There are an estimated 1-1.6 million UK children currently living with undiagnosed eye/vision problems. This needs addressing as soon as possible, so that our children can achieve their full potential. Some eye conditions have symptoms that parents/carers can look out for, and others are harder to discover without a test. For more information please visit https://www.abdo.org.uk/eyecarefaq/childrens-eyecare-basics/ or speak to your local optician team.'

There was a bit of a buzz at the last Lions Club of St. Austell meeting, as members were pleased to welcome Henry Kendall, a bee keeper.  Henry gave a most interesting and informative talk on the threat posed by Asian Hornets, which are a highly aggressive predator of our native insects, and are a significant threat to our Honey Bees and other pollinators.

The Asian Hornet is recognised by being smaller than the European Hornet, and having a dark brown or black body and abdomen with a characteristic single forth segment being yellow/orange, whereas the European Hornet has an abdomen mostly yellow/orange. The Asian Hornet also has brown legs with yellow ends.

ST AUSTELL LIONS INDOOR HORSE RACING EVENING

We recently held an Indoor Horse Racing evening at the Mount Charles Social Club. Thanks goes to members of the Grampound Bowling Club for operating the projection equipment and for running the ‘Tote’. At our last meeting, we were joined by Emily Stevenson of Beach Guardian, who gave an excellent and informative talk on her environmental organisation.

Emily said: “It was an absolute pleasure to join the St. Austell Lions Club meeting to give a presentation about the work I have been doing with my social enterprise, Beach Guardian, to engage, educate and empower against plastic pollution. The Lions were all incredibly passionate and proud to tell me all the wonderful initiatives and steps they were already taking to become less reliant on unnecessary plastics and work with their community to remove litter from the environment. It is crucial for us to work together in this movement, for everybody has their part to play and everybody can do something. I look forward to future collaborations with the group and wish them all the very best.”

The Lions Club of St. Austell give £1000 to Cornwall Hospice Care, from Easter Egg Raffle 2019

Jane Appleton, Community Fundraiser of Cornwall Hospice Care, said: "We are so grateful for the generous donation of £1000.00 from the Lions Club of St Austell, following their very successful Giant Easter Egg Raffle this year.  Their continued support is truly appreciated by everyone at Cornwall Hospice Care.  This donation will fund over 50 hours of nursing care, which shows why support from groups like the Lions is so important.  It costs over £5.12m to run our services each year and with very limited funding from the NHS we really do rely on the support and generosity of our local community."

The Lions would also like to thank the many businesses in the St. Austell area who had one of our Easter Eggs and Raffle Boards: The Western Inn, the Polgooth Inn, the Ship Inn, Pentewan, the White Pyramid, Trewoon, the Holmbush Inn, the Carlyon Arms, the Queens Head, St. Stephen, the Fountain Inn, Mevagissey, the Taj Restaurant, the Hewas Inn, Sticker, Trewoon Village Store, Polgooth Post Office and Store, Penmellyn Vets, and also the New Inn, Goonhavern.

At their last meeting, the Lions welcomed Lion Lynn Goold, from the Lions Club of Fowey, who gave a most enjoyable and informative talk on 'The Way of St. James'.

She talked about the commitment of being a pilgrim, the preparations for the walk which were practical and physical  as well as mental and what it was like to be a pilgrim.  We were informed about the different routes from all over Europe and the Middle East and learnt about the importance of this movement of people through the ages. Today the route has important cultural implications and in 1987 became the 1st European Cultural route and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993.

After a good question and answer session, Lion Lynn was thanked by Lions Club of St. Austell Vice President Tony Pickup

The picture, by Roger Dovey, shows Lion President Geoff Kaye (right) presenting the cheque to Cheryl Smith (centre) and Tom Powlesland (left), Group Leader

For 35 years Girl Guiding Cornwall has been running a week long service camp - the only camp of its kind in the UK - giving disadvantaged children recommended by Cornwall Social Care the chance to have a much needed holiday. At the camp each child has an older 'buddy' on a one to one basis. These buddies are volunteers usually working towards a service project in Guiding or Scouting or a Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award and they act as mentors, companions and positive role models for the children. This year 24 children aged 7-11 and 24 buddies aged 15-21 attended the camp.

Last year the Lions made a donation of £300 to enable two tents to be replaced. This year a larger number of children than usual was recommended and rather than disappoint any of them all were taken to the camp. This resulted in a deficit in the budget allocated and following a request from Cheryl Smith, the Camp Coordinator, the Lions were pleased to donate a further £200 to cover the deficit.

St. Austell Lions Donate £1000 to Action for Children – Kernow Young Carers

Yet again the Lions Club of St Austell entered a team in the Bodmin Lions Ten Tors Walk. This year, as in the past, sponsorship monies were raised, mostly by John Fitzgerald,  to support Action for Children – Kernow Young Carers who provide assistance to over 500 young people in Cornwall. From as young as 4 up to 18 years of age, these youngsters care for their siblings or parents.

In photo  is Lion President Geoff Kaye presenting a cheque for £1000 to Family Support Practitioners Dawn Maddern and Liz Digweed.  Last years donation enabled 35 young people to go, many for the first time, to a pantomime at the Theatre Royal in Plymouth and it is hoped that a similar trip can be arranged this year.

Christmas activities 2013

The Lions Club of St. Austell Annual Christmas Sleigh, with Father Christmas on board, celebrated 4 decades of service visiting the children of St. Austell and area. It has progressed over the years from a simple trailer, an old taxi, and now a purpose built float mounted on a dedicated pick-up truck. This year the Lions Club tried to cover a greater area of St. Austell, with an earlier start at 4.30pm, in an effort to be able to be seen by more children. Unfortunately it is impossible in 16 nights to visit every house in our ever expanding town and surrounding area.

Sleigh collections totalled over £3,000. Donations have already been made to the Food Bank and STAK.

 STORE COLLECTIONS

A total of over £1700 was raised during the Christmas Collections at the town’s Asda, Coop and Tesco stores.

Charities supported by the Club this year are the R.N.L.I., the Cornwall Sight Centre, Cornwall Hospice Care, The Food Bank and S.T.A.K. The winner of the Hamper in the free raffle draw was Lisa Banks with ticket number 0296 and Tesco Manager, James Sanders, is pictured below making the Raffle draw.
St. Austell Lions Club would like to give many thanks to all three supporting stores, and, of course, the many members of the public who generously gave donations.
