Looking to expand the reach of Lions Clubs in the Truckee Meadows, Past International Director Vince Vinella set out in the summer of 2007, going door-to-door, engaging business owners and workers alike about the opportunity to serve their community. Adding to PID Vince's efforts were a number of residents who had been affiliated with Lions in California. Their combined efforts led to the formation of the the Spanish Springs Lions Club. Chartered on December 3, 2007, sponsored by the Sparks-Greenbrae Lions Club; The Spanish Springs Lions Club began as the Sparks evening dinner club.
The Club meets at David's Grill in the Red Hawk Resort on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays for dinner. A varied and interesting program is arranged for each meeting with guest speakers coming before the forum to keep our members well informed and entertained.
The membership of the Club includes 3 Melvin Jones Fellows from 3 different Lions Districts. 2010-2011 will see the first Spanish Springs Lion serve as Cabinet Secretary!
Good fellowship is an important part of our Lions Club and each year a variety of activities are planned. The Club participates in the City of Sparks Adopt-a-Park Program; supports the local Ronald McDonald House, providing dinner on the first Sunday of every other month; the Reno Rodeo, serving breakfast to the early risers; operates a drink booth at the Nugget's Best in West Rib Cook-Off and provides support to the Salvation Army by ringing the bell at Christmas time. We also support many District 46 Projects, such as Camp Dat-So-La-Lee, the District 46 Student Speakers Contest, Lions Project for Canine Companions, Lions Eye Foundation, Lions Flag Day and the Washoe County Sight Conservation Committee, to name a few.
Lions are an international network of 1.3 million men and women in 205 countries and geographic areas who work together to answer the needs that challenge communities around the world.
