They need your help
Introduction
Thirty years of war and a Tsunami in Sri Lanka has resulted in more than 30,000 lost lives and close to a 1,000,000 made homeless. An unfortunate consequence of this disaster is an increase in the number of orphans. It is estimated that at least 5100 children have lost both their parents. Now that the war is over hopefully the numbers will not increase so dramatically and the help given to them will be used on more sustainable projects rather than just to keep them alive.
Shrewsbury Lion Club’s initiative
In the year of 1998, having realised the great need to take care of these children, St. John’s mission started an Orphanage supported by a number of donors from different countries.
From such modest beginnings today there are 5 Orphanages, 3 Nutritional Feeding centres, a Widows Empowerment projects, an Elders home, a Boys home,  a Girls home and also 2 Vocational Training centres, all run by the mission.

The Lion’s club of Shrewsbury has supported one of the nutritional feeding centres for about 30 children and is continuing to do so.  We have also helped to set up a printing shop project where about 40 youngsters are being trained. Since its inception of our imitative, we have raised over £32,000 towards various projects

Involvement of the Lions
All donations are channelled through the Lions club in Shrewsbury to the Lions club in Batticaloa, Sri Lanka who then hand over the donations to the St. John’s mission. The Lions club over-see the project to ensure both transparency and accountability. As they are operating in the local community they are aware of the local needs and make sure that the donations are used wisely to meet some of those needs.
The Lion’s clubs are purely voluntary, the largest service organisation in the world with over a million members in 192 countries. As such no administration charges are incurred. So, you can rest assured that 100% of your donations will find its way to the children.
The scheme
Just £5.00 a month will provide three square meals for one child for a whole month. The scheme will operate by collecting donations on a monthly basis.
All you need to do is to set up a standing order or direct debit by downloading a form http://www.srilankanorphanages.org/how-to-donate/ and send it to your bank. You could set up a standing order yourself if you bank via the Internet. The down loaded standing order form will give you the details. You could also make a one off payment to any of the projects on the website. Please see 2010 initiatives. . Please send your donations to Mrs. Jean Rickard, Treasurer, Lions club of Shrewsbury, 98, London Road, Shrewsbury SY2 6PN.

The need in Sri Lanka is enormous. We can’t help everyone. Some wise man said” Isn’t it better to light a single candle than curse the darkness”. Let us try and help, at least a few children who through no fault of their own are parentless, who are less fortunate than our children. Let’s light just a few more candles. Just £5.00 to feed a child for a whole month, how amazing is that!
