Flag Day at Scott Teays

Flag Day at Eastbrook

On Wednesday, February 27th, Scott/Teays Lions Club members Bill Hensley and Harold Walker visited four Teays Valley area schools ( Eastbrook, Mountain View, Scott Teays and West Teays ) and presented a program about the American flag for 279 fifth grade students. The students were told about the early. history of the flag . That the Betsy Ross flag with the 13 stars in a circle was not the design of the first flag as often thought. The first flag is thought to have been designed by a New Jersey congressman, Mr Hopkinson and authorized on June 14, 1777. The stars were laid out in parallel rows. That the flag flying over Fort McHenry, that inspired Francis Scott Key to write the words to the Star Spangled Banner, during the war of 1812 was the only flag to have 15 stripes. The students were told how to treat the flag with proper respect. That the flag should always be on the speakers right. That a person should always stand at attention with hat removed and right hand over the heart when the National Anthem is playing, when the flag is raised or lowered and when the flag passes by in a parade. and that no flag should fly higher than the American flag. That a flag flying at night should be lighted.

The Lions also introduced their essay contest “What the American Flag Means to Me”. The essay winners from each school will be honored at an awards dinner on May 7th sponsored by the Scott/Teays Lions club.
