Saltville-Rich Valley to aid tornado victims with $10,000 LOVF Grant
The Saltville-Rich Valley Lions Club will administer a $10,000 Lions of Virginia Foundation (LOVF) Emergency Disaster Relief Grant to aid residents affected by the Glade Spring/Chilhowie tornado.
Lions 24-F District Governor Jan Bowling made a request for the grant on Thursday, April 28, immediately after the tornado hit Washington County.
"The Glade Spring and Chilhowie areas were the hardest hit areas and I have asked the Saltville-Rich Valley Lions Club to handle the administration of the grant funds for emergency needs," said Bowling.
Lion MB Maule, president of the Saltville-Rich Valley Lions Club, has agreed to work with the disaster relief effort, along with LCIF Coordinator Lion Warren Elliott, who will be handling the special disaster relief accounting of monies spent. This report will be provided to LOVF after the grant has been expended.
Assistance from the Chilhowie, Marion and Abingdon Lions Clubs has been requested. Their efforts will begin just as soon as needs are assessed and volunteers are signed up.
Dwight Barker of the Chilhowie Lions Club is now taking applications for volunteers to work at the Washington County tornado site. He may be contacted at 276-356-2847.
"There are many agencies helping at this point and we will be ready to assist just as soon as we can as Lions members," said Bowling. "I would like to ask every club in District 24-F to donate to this disaster relief effort in the Washington County area if at all possible," Bowling said.
Checks should be sent to Lion Warren Elliott, payable to Disaster Relief Fund, PO Box 488, Saltville, VA 24370. Lion Warren will be reporting to the district and will keep clubs updated with detailed records as to how all the donations are spent for the Disaster Relief Effort.
