Meetings

Happy Birthday to Us!

Our club turned 85 on January 18, 2014. Back in 1929, we had 292 people join us for our charter night celebration. Within two months, the club had 48 members. For a number of years, we had a newsletter called "The Richmond Broadcaster" filled with jokes, sayings, club projects, and member activities.

The Richmond Lions Club continues to play an active role. Projects include helping to develop the city's new nature park, working with local schools to provide eye exams and glasses to kids needing some help, and assisting in mission work to screen, sort, and clean eyeglasses. Here's a letter from one of kids we helped this last year:

Dear Person that made my glasses. I like my glasses that you made. I can see very clearly now. Thank you very much.

Richmond Lions Club

Richmond is a town of 2470 strong in the very northern part of Utah. Our Lions Club participates in many city activities: Black & White Days (the longest running Holstein show west of the Mississippi), the annual Easter Egg Hunt, the city party, and putting up (and taking down) the Christmas lights for the city.

Service Areas

The three schools in Richmond--Park Elementary, White Pine Middle School, and North Cache 8-9 Center--partner with the Lions Club to identify students who may need assistance in obtaining an eye exam and eyeglasses. Once a student is approved, an appointment is set up with a local optometrist and either part or all of the cost is borne by the club.

The club also assists in other ways around town: putting up and taking down the holiday lights in the park and at the city office; organizing and managing the vendor booths at Black & White Days as well as taking the tickets for the draft horse pull in the evening; putting on the annual Easter Egg Hunt. Generally at least one additional project is done each year that typically involves building, remodeling, or refurbishing something like the park pavilions or the star garden. The club will be working with the city to develop a nature park.

Black & White Days

The 102nd Black & White Days celebration will run May 15-20, 2017. The cattle show and sale is Tuesday through Friday. On Saturday is the town celebration with the chuckwagon breakfast, cowabunga race, open horse show, vendors and rides, and the parade. The festivities culminate with one of the few open draft horse pulls in the nation. The Richmond Lions are responsible for organizing the vendors, rides, and the horse pull (tickets, sponsors, etc.); without our help, the city would not be able to provide all of these activities. This is one of our main fundraisers.

Please visit the city's website at http://www.richmond-utah.com/bwdays.html for more information on this celebration.

Nature Park

Richmond's newest park is under way. Thanks to the efforts of a LDS ward of students, much of the trash, fallen limbs, and heavy underbrush were cleared away one Saturday. The city has poured the concrete pad and begun construction of the restroom. The Lions will put up the rail fence. A small pond and numerous paths will also be added as time and funds allow.
