SEW-vember Community Project

Christmas is a time of stress as budgets are juggled around increasing commercialism and the pressure to buy ever-more expensive and elaborate gifts. It won't be long before we again see the annual Christmas decorations hanging in shopping malls bombarding us with messages to start buying.

Here in Raglan several families with young families have chosen to not 'buy-into' the gift trap and instead look forward to making their own gifts, not just at Christmas time but for any special occasion. What is also special is that they make them out of the ordinary bits and pieces found in their homes.

There's a real value in this that has nothing -to do with money."

It also means we're not just adding more stuff' into the world".

Raglan Lions supports SEW-vember as an opportunity for anyone interested in making simple and special home-made gifts to get some help and inspiration. Beginning on the first Thursday in November and continuing very Thursday that month the Raglan Union Church hall will become the focus for 'SEW-vember project.

SEW-vember is about making NOT buying and Raglan Lions hopes the workshops will give participants confidence to made gifts they. Can be proud of as well as reduce, re-use and recycle 'stuff' they already have at home.          -

The SEW-vember project want to give parents an opportunity to reconnect with their creative self and to be more deliberate about what they do with Christmas

Raglan Lions has funded Sewing machines that will be set up to use with an expert on using them available to give some tips. A budget advisor will also be on hand to give tips on budgeting and an area will be set up each Thursday for young children to-be looked after.

There is no need to book in to be in a workshop. “Just come along on the day. We'll do it the Raglan way where things just fall into place."

The Executive Committee of the Raglan Club has approved the proposal from the Raglan Residents & Ratepayers to operate a “CARBOOT SALE” in the club car park adjacent to the Club.

As the Community House was unable to secure Road Closures for their Market Days. The Residents & Ratepayers, the Lions Club of Raglan and the Raglan Club will bring back the “Car Boot Sale” concept.

All monies made would go to the Lions Club of Raglan for their Youth project that is getting a “Leos Club” up and running for Raglan.

The Operational Support Unit would manage the operations of the event and it would be restricted to the car park. From 9.00am till 2.00pm.

The proposed dates include 22 October, 19 November, 14 December 2011. And three dates next year being 14 January, 4 February and & April 2012.
