November 14th is 2017 World Diabetes Day

Centers for Disease Control says:

In the U.S., there are a total of 30.3 million people with diabetes of which only 23.1 million people have been diagnosed, leaving 7.2 million people undiagnosed. In addition, over 33% of adults in the U.S. have pre-diabetes. Most alarming is that rates of type 2 diabetes in youth are increasing along with obesity rates.

Md. Department of Health and Mental Hygiene says:

There are 1.6 million adults in the State of Maryland estimated to have pre-diabetes, but only 408,000 know.  Up to 30% of people who have prediabetes will go on to develop type 2 diabetes within five years of diagnosis, unless they take steps to improve their health. Programs are available through the Caroline County Health Department, 410-479-8080.

What can you do?

Learn about the risk factors and see your doctor and/or pediatrician to get tested, especially if you are at risk. Talk to your family about lifestyle changes, to include eating healthy and exercising regularly, and:

Take the 5-2-1-0 steps every day

            5 - fruits/vegetables a day

2 - no more than two hours of inactive recreation a day

1 – one or more hours of physical activity a day

           0 – Zero sugary drinks
