Dear Perkasie Lions,
I am writing on behalf of a friend of mine's son, Andrew Lowe. He has been diagnosed with Stargardt's disease. Stargardt's disease - also called fundus f1avimaculatus or Stargardfs macular dystrophy (SMD) - affects approximately one in 10,000 people and is characterized by central vision loss early in life. Progressive vision loss eventually leads to blindness in most cases. Stargardt's is an inherited disease passed along to children when both parents carry mutations of a gene associated with vitamin A processing in the eye.

Andrew is in the process of losing his central vision. There is a new invention to help children like Andrew. They are called E-sight glasses. Another child in Pennridge was featured on Fox 29 who was fitted for these glasses ( They are life changing and use cutting edge military technology to get images to the outer area of the macula when central vision is lost. They are also very expensive ($15,000) and require travel to Ohio for a fitting. Andrew is 12 and is one of 6 adopted children in the Lowes' family.
