Protecting our Environment

To honour our planet Earth, and to remind all the people how important our ecosystem is, we would like everyone to become aware of our consumption behaviour and the consequences  this  could have on the environment of the Planet Earth. So therefore we, Lions Club Paramaribo North, among others, have decided to help raise  “Awareness “ about current and emerging environmental issues.

Lions Club Paramaribo North has participated in one of the projects of Lions Clubs International called : Protecting our Environment . In cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture, we have launched the project at the Maria Garden. The Maria Internaat (boarding school), which was founded in 1956 by the Nuns of the Congregations, is an independent private institution, and is situated in Paramaribo. The Maria Internaat gives shelter to girls in  age groups ranging from 8 to 18 years. These  girls come from the various districts of Suriname, and attend school in the Capital City of Suriname, Paramaribo. Currently, there are 20 girls in Maria Internaat. At present a new management is working fervently on the establishment of Maria Garden, which is located in District Saramacca. The main purpose of this garden is to create a country house for the Maria Internaat, and also a place where youngsters, as well as the elderly can enjoy recreational and educational activities.

The management of the Maria Internaat is also supported by trainees and volunteers from The Netherlands and Belgium. On Saturday, the 23rd of April 2016, the members of Lionsclub Paramaribo North  happily supported the Maria Garden by planting 100 fruit trees for the sake of helping and promoting the development of Nature itself, and of course, the Maria Garden as well
