Professor Naipal, hydrologist at the Anton de Kom University of Suriname, has started a mangrove project since 2015 to protect people and the environment in the Weg naar Zee  area where around 17,000 people live. This area is also an famous agricultural area that provides the Surinamese market with a large share of fruit and vegetables. In recent years we have had more problems with flooding in this area. As a result of human actions, the vegetation of the coastline has completely disappeared, with the result that the powerful water of the Atlantic Ocean destroys the coastline by nibbling parts of the coastline, resulting in considerable flooding in this residential area and agricultural area. The farmers suffer a lot of losses through the saltwater of the ocean. Parts of their agricultural area have also been washed away by the sea in recent years. People's possessions are being destroyed by the flooding as a result of the high water levels in the ocean and the direct channels around it. With the rise in sea level, this situation is literally a threat to people and the environment. Through this project, the lions have provided the professor with wood to build new scaffolding and renovate the existing ones so that he can put more mangrove plants into the soil on the coastline, which will on long term serve to keep the soil compact to protect the coastline and people and the environment. The roots keep the mud compact in combination with bamboo network (sediment trapping unit) walls so that the washed-up sand and mud banks can no longer wash away. This will slowly restore the coastline in a natural way. In the long term, fertile land is also created as a result of the land acquisition, so that the farmers can again optimally practice agriculture on the fertile soil that is naturally re-formed. A large part of the population in Suriname , lives on the young coastal plain and because of the rising seagulls the coastline was gone. with this project this process is halted starting in the way to the sea where we as lions have supported the professor with wood. In this area the damage has been quite large in recent years. More help is needed to give shape to this project. From 2015, the coastline has been increased by 1.5 meters with this project. The professor has build a sediment trapping units as a pilot and it is a success till now. But we are not there yet. There is still a lot of work to be done. During this project, the professor has already put mangrove plants in the ground, but dozens will still have to be planted on the coastline. with our gesture to the professor, he can put more scaffolding in the mud, which makes planting the mangrove plants faster and easier.
