White Cane Day Fundraisers- We are back collecting in the month of October 2021

Thankfully we have begun collecting for White Cane this fall and through October (weather permitting) at the Gateway Shopping Center (near the liquor store) 5-7pm and at The Malvern Shopping Center on King Street on Saturdays 8-10am.

  • Each spring and fall, PBM Lions appea) or in local public spaces to solicit donations to help us provide vision-related services in the local community.  One such service is helping provide eyeglasses to children of local families in need.
  • We also want to build awareness about the purpose of the 'white cane'. A surprising number of local individuals professed to not know what a white cane looked like and many more did not know that the PA drivers' handbook contained regulations about the courtesy drivers must extend to a blind or vision-impaired individual with a white cane, among them:
    • When driving near a blind pedestrian who is carrying a white cane or walking with a guide dog, you must slow down, yield the right of way and be prepared to stop your vehicle in order to prevent injury or danger to the pedestrian
    • Under rules related to pedestrians:  Yield the right-of-way (stop if necessary) to blind pedestrians, whether they have a white can or a guide dog or are led by others
