BABCOCK MILL PARK PLAYGROUND

The new Natural Playground at Babcock Mill Park, located on Bridge Street in Odessa, features a slide, a short rock-climbing wall, as well as other wooden features designed to allow children to interact with nature. The playground cost $100,000 and was funded by Loyalist Township and the Odessa Lions Club. "Imaginative natural playgrounds can inspire children to connect with the natural world", said Chris Eggink, president of the Odessa Lions.

A natural playground uses natural materials to provide opportunities for growth and play for children of all ages through the use of complex and challenging structures, with features encouraging climbing, balancing, jumping, mobility, strength, imagination and coordination. Commercial designer, Tara Galpin of Wentworth Landscapes worked closey with the Odessa Lions.

“We found some research and we actually found that the play value of the natural playgrounds is actually better than those other plastic playgrounds,” said Vice President Odessa Lion Dave Savage, “It has logs and stumps and natural areas and that is what kids like to play with, that is what I liked to play with as a kid and that is what our kids should have.”

The Odessa Lions Club presented the idea at their monthly meeting to two councilors from Loyalist Township last year and after positive feedback they brought the idea to the rest of council in December. The park was officially opened to the public October 30, 2016.

This is phase one of the design. Phase two will include swings and a sand play area, though no date has been set yet. The masterplan includes pathways through the park and seating areas.
