ODESSA BARRIO LIONS CLUB

Lions Clubs International was born in Chicago, Illinois, In June of 1917, when an insurance salesman, Melvin Jones, decided it was not enough to serve his own business interests, but that men needed to serve those less fortunate in their communities.  For more than 85 years, Lions have been recognized throughout the world for their services to the blind and visually impaired.  Back in 1925, when Helen Keller challenged the Lions to become “Knights of the Blind”, she could not have possibly imagined the impact of Lions’ commitment to blindness prevention.  Since that time, we have grown to tackling such problems as blindness and drug abuse as well as diabetes awareness, and finding assistance and training for the deaf, disabled, underprivileged and the elderly.

We are the youngest service club community-based organization in the world.  We are succeeding because we have embraced all those committed to building a brighter future for themselves and the world.

The Odessa Barrio Lions Club, sponsored by the Odessa Downtown Lions Club, was chartered in 1991 and has served the community proudly ever since.  We are a visible presence in the community of Odessa when we wear our bright purple and gold vests with the Lions logo on them.  We are a group of civic-minded men and women who have banded together to do what cannot be done by a single person.  Lions are willing to give their time, energy and resources in service of others.  It is not a fraternal, social or political organization.  A Lion is rewarded by the satisfaction of serving others, by improving the community and by endeavoring to leave the world a better place.  The rewards are in direct proportion to the effort expended.

The Odessa Barrio Lions Club community service activities include, but are not limited to:

·        Providing eye exams and new eyeglasses for needy children and adults in the Odessa area

·        Loaning hospital and medical equipment to those in need

·        Recycling used eyeglasses

·        Sponsoring special needs and diabetic children to attend the Kerrville Texas Lions Camp

·        Providing Scholarships to those in need, which helps pay some expenses of Students in the Permian Basin, in order for them to attend Odessa College and U.T.P.B.

We need your help to keep these projects going.  Please sponsor one or more of these projects.

All Sponsors will be recognized for all Club Activities throughout the sponsoring year, which begins in July 1 and ends June 30.
