Donations to good causes in the local community

Newport Lions Club welcome requests for financial assistance from individuals or groups in the local community.

Please bear in mind that we have limited resources so we must consider where the greatest need lies when considering such requests. However, we are happy to assist where we are able to do so.

To make a request please contact Newport Lions Club.

Prostate Cancer Awareness Event

Newport Lions Club organise an Annual Prostate Cancer Awareness Event. This has taken place in October and the venue is the Cosy Hall in Newport.

The evening is supervised by Consultant Urologist Mr David Baxter Smith who gives a talk about everything to do with the prostate.

Phlebotomists are on hand to take small blood samples for the purpose of Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) testing for those men who choose to take up the offer of a free test.

David Baxter Smith receives the results from the laboratory and communicates them to each man tested by letter within three weeks of the test date.

Although the tests are provided free, they are paid for by generous donations to Newport Lions Club. Donations are gratefully received by Newport Lions Club during the evening.

Senior Citizens Christmas Party

In the Christmas season Newport Lions Club host a Christmas Party where all local senior citizens are invited to join us for an evening party in the Burton Borough School Hall.

The school Music Department usually supply one of their excellent bands to provide the entertainment to start the party. This is followed by a tea break where sandwiches, cakes and mince pies are served with tea and coffee by Newport Lions and friends. There is plenty of time for all of our guests to chat amongst themselves. Further musical entertainment is then provided by selected local artistes.

If you would like to get involved with this event please contact Newport Lions Club.

Message In A Bottle

The Lions Message In A Bottle is a simple idea that encourages people to keep their basic personal and medical details in a common place where they can easily be found in an emergency.

The information is kept in the fridge, where the emergency services will expect to find it in the event of being called to your home. They will know you have a bottle by two labels. One is fixed on the inside of the front door or the main entrance to your home and the other to the outside of the door of your fridge.

Newport Lions Club have a supply of Bottles for distribution within our local area. To obtain your Bottle please contact Newport Lions Club.

Spectacles Recycling

Lions Clubs International British Isles & Ireland Spectacle Recycling Initiative, launched originally by the Lions Club of Chichester in 1967, today sees nearly a third of a million pairs of used glasses collected, sorted and distributed to clinics and eye camps in communities across Africa, India and eastern Europe in partnership with Medico France.

The project also raises financial support for eye related projects at home and overseas by recycling scrap metal from spectacles that are broken or unsuitable for recycling.

Newport Lions Club place spectacles collection boxes with opticians, doctors surgeries and schools in our locality. When the boxes are filled we collect the spectacles and send them to the Lions Club of Chichester for recycling.

If you have any queries regarding local spectacles recycling please contact Newport Lions Club.
