Peace Poster Contest

International Lions Clubs conduct an annual poster contest on the subject of peace.  It provides our young people a voice in the pursuit of global peace.  Locally, the contest is open to middle school students in both the New Kent County Middle School and the Charles City County Middle School.  The contest is conducted at the beginning of each school year.  The club provides monetary awards.  The winner of each contest is forwarded to the district, multidistrict, and international competitions, where a grand prize winner and 23 merit winners are selected.

College Scholarships

Our club will award two $1,000 scholarships in 2016, one graduating senior from New Kent High School and one from Charles City High School.  The selection criteria will weighted heavily on community service.  Consideration will also be given to leadership, future goals, extra-curricular activity, and financial need.  The Scholarships will be awarded at the close of the school year.

Other Projects

In addition to the hands-on projects mentioned above, the New Kent Lions Club also supports Lion projects at the District and State level.  We also support worthy projects conducted by other organizations.

Leader Dog

Founded by three Lions in the Detroit area in 1939, Leader Dogs for the Blind empowers people who are blind, visually impaired or Deaf-Blind with skills for a lifetime of independent travel, opening doors that may seem to have closed with the loss of sight.  Thanks to the generosity of dedicated supporters, all programs are provided free to clients, including meals and housing during training, travel and equipment.  Leader Dog programs are crafted to address individual situations and adapt to the individuals changing needs at any point in their lives.  Through thorough training, Leader Dog’s programs give clients the confidence and skills they need to live independent lives.

Providence Forge Recreation Center

We are very fortunate in the Providence Forge area to have a community center that you can rent for events right in your back yard.  There are several events during the year that the Association puts on for the membership.  You can rent the building without being a member at an increased rental price.

The New Kent County Lions Club holds events at the center throughout the year.  The club also gives them a donation each year.  Recently we donated tables and trash cans to the center.

District 24-D Mobile Sight and Hearing Van

District 24-D has a Mobile Sight and Hearing Unit (van) that the clubs may rent to give eye screenings, hearing screenings and diabetic screenings at any location.  This is a great asset for an area that doesn’t have a building that is available or suitable for screenings.  It is equipped with the equipment necessary to accomplish this.
