Candy Day Fundraiser

Every October Mattoon Lions and volunteers are on local street corners soliciting funds for our signature projects to aid those with sight or hearing disabilities.  Many may not know where these funds are used.  A short list follows:

  • Camp Lions for Children and Adults
  • Low Vision Clinic and comprehensive evaluation clinics statewide
  • Diabetic Eye Center and mobile Diabetic Eye Clinics
  • Mobile Hearing Services Unit
  • Infant Hearing Screening
  • Cochlear Implant Program
  • Used Hearing Aid Bank and Eyegalasses Cllection
  • Social Services

Mattoon Lions are thankful for the generosity of residents and visitors whom have made this event an outstanding success over the years.  As always, donations are used for the project and not for club activities.

Sweet Corn Project

For more than a dozen years, Lion John Doty has been planting and tending sweet corn for the Lions to sell to raise funds for charity.  For many years, the funds raised have been going to the Mattoon Food Bank.  There is always some extra corn that is donated directly to the food bank so their customers can enjoy the fresh vegetables.  Thanks to our many loyal customers, the Mattoon Lions will be donating $3,275 to the food bank in 2013.

Thanks to the Doty family for their support.  I know we have enjoyed a lot of good eating over the years!

Disaster Relief

November 2013 brought tornados and strong winds to many in the area.  Fortunately Mattoon was spared but that doesn't mean we aren't involved.  Lions International, which we support, is already in the process of releasing funds to the hard hit areas of Gifford and Washington.  Douglas Count may also be on the list.  District Lions are also involed.  Water has already been delivered to the Gifford area and plans are underway to get other needed supplies to those hit the hardest.  Local Lions Clubs throughout District 1E will be send ing checks to support the needs of our neighbors.  Our own Mattoon Lion Elmer Voudrie has been on the front lines helping with the cleanup.  Lions Serve...

Anyone wanting to help with this effort can send a check to the Mattoon Lions Club and we will make sure every penny is used for basic support while those affected wait for insurance checks and are busy with essential cleanup efforts.
