A total of over nine hundred (900) persons benefited freely from the most recent visit of the US Eye Care & ENT Mission to St. Vincent this year. The team was hosted by the Lions Club of Kingstown-SVG as in the previous (43) years. Incidentally, the yearly mission is also supported by the Leo Club of St. Vincent and the Ministry of Health.

The 28- member medical team arrived at the Argyle International Airport on Saturday 25th May, where they were met by representatives from the Kingstown Lions and Leo Clubs. The team comprised the mission director – Dr. David Mc Cabe, 4 ophtalmologists- Drs. Eric Purdy, Cathy Mc Cabe, John Dagianis, and Megan Cochran. ENT specialist – Dr. John Fallon. Additionally, there were two opthalmic scrub technicians and several optical technicians. This group worked assisduously from Sunday 26th – Friday 31st at the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital. Over 100 successful surgeries were performed with assistance from the hospital operating room staff, as well as the sterilization room nurses.

The optometry team worked at Arnos Vale Sports Complex medical facility and took care of eye examinations, donation of prescribed eye glasses, reading glasses and also blood pressure and blood sugar checks. It is estimated that approximately 600 satisfied patients, received the services of the optometry team.

It should be noted that pre-operative screening examinations were done on Sunday 26th at MCMH. From Monday through Friday, the US Medical Mission provided cataract surgeries, glaucoma surgeries, corneal transplants, eye muscle surgeries, eyelid surgeries and orbital and lacrimal surgerical procedures. The doctors indicated that all surgeries were successfully performed and that they were particularly pleased with the progress which the recipients of the new eyes (corneal transplants) had made over the week.

Dr. John Fallon, ENT specialist collaborated with Dr. St. Clair Thomas to provide ENT consultation and surgeries at MCMH . The Kingstown Lions and Leo Club members played a pivitol role in coorodinating and providing administrative and dispensary assistance throughout the duration of this project.

Many Vincentians are today high in praise of the US Eye Care & ENT Mission 2019. The mission has just completed 44 years of productive medical services to this nation. The Lions Club of Kingstown-SVG deeply appreciate their humanitarian work in our blessed land and eagerly await their return in 2020, as we continue to serve.
