History of the Jarrettsville Lions Club

  • Founded in 1949 with 39 charter members, under the sponsorship of the Bel Air Lions Club
  • Jesse Rhodes was the moving force behind the new Lions Club and became its first president.
  • Early fundraisers included a “Roaring 20s Review,” a “Gay 90s Review,” and pancake suppers. Early fund raisers also included fruit cake sales, raffles, circuses, dances, and manning a concession booth at Memorial Stadium.
  • In 1955, under president Dick Henderson, a teen club was started at North Harford High School.
  • Also in 1955, funds were raised to buy the first ambulance for the Jarrettsville Fire Company. The Lions Club supplied the manpower to run the ambulance for several years.
  • The Lions Club played a major role in getting a traffic light installed at the main intersection in Jarrettsville.
  • Some of the early service projects included providing holiday gift baskets as well as shoes and overshoes for needy students at the Jarrettsville School. Another major project was the installation of lights, bleachers, and a concession stand for the Jarrettsville Ball Field.
  • In 1970, under president Marvel Winskowski, the Lions Club brought the carnival to town.
  • The ladies of the Jarrettsville United Methodist Church have provided the meeting place and meals for the Lions Club for more than fifty years.
  • For many years the Jarrettsville Pharmacy housed and managed the Lions Club’s health aid loan closet.
  • The Jarrettsville Lions Club has sponsored new Lions Clubs in Long Green Valley, Fallston, and Hereford/Parkton.
  •  Many of the Jarrettsville Lions have served in positions at the Zone, Region, and District levels.
