Lions Club

With great sadness, we have to report that our Lions Club has closed down. The final day of serving our community was on 30th June 2015.

This ends nearly 35 years of the Lions in our club helping those in our community.

Our Lions Club had been "Serving the Communities" of the villages in our area for nearly 35 years, from Goring to Sonning Common & from Whitchurch to Woodcote. As some of our members get older, they naturally get less active.

After a number of years unsuccessfully trying to recruit new members we had no option other than to close down at the end of the 2015 Lion Year. When the club started we had over 30 members, this fluctuated over the years from between 38 and 9 members. At the time of closing we had 7 Lions in the club and three of those were unable to help in many ways, due to long term illness or age.

In the recent past our club help has supported a wide range of projects such as

• Supplied & assisted installation of kissing gates for Chiltern Way footpaths in & near Woodcote
• Supplied & planted Jubilee trees in Goring, Woodcote, Whitchurch Hill & Whitchurch on Thames
• Chrismas Hampers to many in need over the years
• Supplied & installed numerous washing machines, fridges and furniture for a number of families in need.
• Cleared houses & assisted occupants following floods
• Supported numerous Charities, both local and national inlcuding
  • Berks|Oxon|Bucks Air Ambulance
  • Macmillan Nurses
  • Riding for the Disabled
  • The RBH Hospital
  • Sue Ryder Hospice
  • Helen & Douglas House
  • Footsteps (Dorchester on Thames)
  • Goring & Woodcote and Sonning Common Health Centres
  • Woodcote community centre (The Lions Den)
  • Goring community centre
  • ALL the local schools, including many pre school units
  • ALL the local nursing homes
  • Local Scouts, Guides, Cubs & Brownie packs
  • Hosting Children from Chernobyl
  • and MANY MANY more
• Additionally we have supported approved overseas aid projects, usually Lions International ones such as Water Aid, Eye Health Programme and the Lions Clubs International Foundation.
• Our collection of unwanted spectacles for recycling continues and the boxes to accept them are still in the normal places. We will pass these onto the Lions Club of Reading.
