Meetings

1. June 20, 1956-- 25 charter members inducted into the Norhtwest Glendale Lions Club (NGLC). 

2. 1964-- District convention at Catalina Island. NGLC named "Best in District." Members Jim Pollard was named "Best President" and Roy Biederman "Best Secretary." This set the tone for NGLC's leadership in the District. 

3. NGLC began a long association with the Special Education Department of Hoover High School, assisting the school with braille writers and other equipment.

4. NGLC has participated in the Student Speakers Contest annually for at least 40 years and the Lions International Peace Poster Contest for youth since 1995.

5. 1969--- NGLC purchased a van for the Spastic Children's Foundation.

6. 1968 to 1979--- NGLC held a pancake breakfast fundraiser attended by hundreds on Brand Avenue.

7. 1970--- Since this time NGLC has sponsored Little League teams, Scouts, Boy's State delegates, the YMCA the YWCA, 

8. 1970 to 1980--- NGLC sponsored a Lions Bowl game for the Glendale Bears Junior All-American Football team.

9. 1987--- NGLC initiated a program of scholarships for handicapped students. $60,000 in scholarships has been awarded to 60 students in 20 years. The program continues with awards of three $1,000 scholarships annually to students at Glendale high schools and Glendale Community College.9. NGLC is a sponsor of the Foothill Service Club for the Blind, along with three other Lions Clubs.

11. NGLC supports various programs to aid the blind and visually impaired, including the Blind Children's Center, the Atwater Park Center for Developmentally Handicapped Children, the Foundation for the Junior Blind, freee eye exams and free eye glasses for needy individuals.

12. NGLC has been a member of the Southern California Lions Eye Institute since its founding; has provided camperships and support for the Lions Camps at Teresita Pines for deaf Children; has supported the Glendale Self-Aid Workshop, the Salvation Army and Catholic Charities.  

13. 1993--- NGLC raised $6,600 for the Lions International Campaign "Sightfirst."

14. NGLC has contributed up to $20,000 annually to charity.

15. NGLC donated $3,000 to the Lions South Asia Relief Fund (tsunami).

16. NGLC donated $3,000 to the Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund in New Orleans. 

17. A $10,000 bequest from a past president, the late Robert E. Davies, provided funds to form and finance a new Leo Club (junior Lions) at Hoover High School. This group of students completed several charity projects, including collecting 650 pairs of used eyeglasses for third world countries in a joint project with the Glendale School District.

18. NGLC has sponsored the KidCare photo ID program at Columbus Elementary School for the past 14 years and have provided flags for Flag Day celebrations at several elementary schools.

19. For the past 15 years, NGLC has recognized organizations who make significant contributions to the city with a Community Appreciation Award. 

20. Eighteen president or former NGLC members are Melvin Jones Fellows (Life Members).
